About This Role

Job Overview

A medical practice in Winston Salem, NC needs a detail focused Medical Biller/Coder to join their operations team. This role sits at the intersection of patient care and revenue cycle management. You'll translate clinical procedures into accurate billing codes, file claims with insurance carriers, and resolve payment discrepancies. The work is independent but collaborative; you'll coordinate with providers on documentation gaps and with front desk staff on patient data accuracy.

Duties & Responsibilities / JobXi / Winston Salem, NC

  • Review patient charts and assign ICD 10, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on documented diagnoses and services.
  • Submit electronic claims to commercial insurers, Medicare, and Medicaid through practice management software.
  • Follow up on denied or rejected claims within 48 hours; don't let money sit on the table.
  • Post payments from insurers and patients to individual accounts. Reconcile batches daily.
  • Audit your own work weekly for coding errors before a larger compliance review hits your desk.
  • Communicate with insurance reps by phone or portal to appeal underpaid claims or correct coding mismatches.

Requirements / JobXi / Winston Salem, NC

Certification matters here: A current CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCS P credential is non negotiable. Two years of medical billing experience in a physician's office or outpatient clinic setting preferred. You're comfortable navigating payer portals for at least three major carriers such as UHC, Aetna, Anthem, or Cigna. High school diploma required; an associate degree in Health Information Management is a plus but not mandatory for solid coders who know their modifiers inside out. This role requires sitting at a workstation for extended periods while reviewing digital records; basic visual acuity and typing speed matter more than heavy lifting.

What It's Like in This Role / JobXi / Winston Salem, NC

The office itself runs on NextGen EHR and AdvancedMD for billing functions; experience with either helps you hit the ground running. Teams are small here: maybe two other billers handling separate provider groups, so you won't get lost in the shuffle but there's no hiding either. Your schedule will be mostly predictable day shifts Monday through Friday, though month end close can stretch things by an hour or two if claim backlogs stack up. Managers expect you to self pace as long as weekly KPIs around clean claim rates stay above 95%. Tools like clearinghouse reports (Office Ally or ZirMED) become second nature after your first few weeks.

Why You'll Like This Opportunity

The variety keeps it interesting; one week you're decoding orthopedics procedures, the next it's internal medicine E&M levels across different payers. Many employers in Winston Salem, NC offer hybrid flexibility after a standard 90 day training period passes smoothly. Credential maintenance gets easier because employers often cover renewal fees and CEUs when they see you're committed long term (that isn't always true elsewhere). You also build relationships with local provider networks that make future job hunts less about cold applications and more about referrals from physicians who trust your work already.
