The Role
APS is looking for an Electrical Estimator to join our Pre Construction team in Winston Salem, NC. You'll report to the Chief Estimator. The core job is straightforward: prepare accurate, competitive cost estimates for commercial and industrial electrical construction projects. If you're the kind of person who reads a set of drawings and immediately sees labor, material, and time requirements, this is worth a conversation.
This role sits in the office but gets out occasionally for site visits and pre bid meetings. Some weeks during bid season will run long ; that's part of the deal. But it's also how you win work and help the company grow profitably.
What You'll Actually Do
- Review project plans, specifications, and bid documents to develop detailed cost estimates
- Perform quantity take offs for electrical systems ; power, lighting, low voltage, and the rest
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes until you've got real numbers
- Prepare and submit complete bid packages within deadlines (no shortcuts)
- Identify risks, opportunities, and value engineering options that save money or improve the bid
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams to get the details right
- Maintain accurate cost databases and historical records ; your future self will thank you
- Attend pre bid meetings and site visits as needed
- Assist with project handoff to operations after you've won the award
What You Need to Bring
- 3+ years of experience in electrical estimating or a closely related field
- Solid knowledge of commercial and/or industrial electrical systems
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications like it's second nature
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills ; you should enjoy working with numbers
- Proficiency in estimating software (Accubid or McCormick) and Microsoft Excel
- Good communication and organizational skills; you'll work with a lot of different people
What Would Make You Stand Out
- Electrical field experience ; electrician, foreman, or similar hands on background
- Experience with design build projects
- Familiarity with NEC (National Electrical Code)
- A bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (not required, but it helps)
Work Environment & Schedule
This is an office based role. You'll sit for extended periods during the day, but you'll also make occasional trips to job sites. During heavy bid periods, expect some extended hours. It's not every week ; just when the deadlines pile up.
Compensation & Benefits
The pay range for this role is $75,000 to $100,000 depending on experience. Beyond salary, APS offers a full package:
