About This Role
What's the role
HomeGoods is hiring a Cashier for Winston Salem, NC. You'd be working at a Fortune 100 company that runs TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, and other off price retailers. They're pretty big, and they put a focus on helping people grow.
As Cashier you'd be the person customers interact with at the register, but you won't just stand there ringing stuff up all day. You'll also help keep the store organized and clean, unload merchandise, and do what's called "store recovery" ; basically tidying up throughout your shift.
- Engage with every customer who comes through your line. Talk to them, help them find things if you can, make sure they leave happy.
- Ring up purchases and process returns accurately. Count change back by hand (no just handing over a receipt).
- Promote the store's credit card and loyalty programs when it makes sense.
- Follow all merchandising rules ; how product gets placed on shelves matters here.
- Process new merchandise before it hits the sales floor. That means opening boxes, tagging items, getting them ready.
- Keep an eye out for loss prevention issues ; theft awareness is part of everyone's job.
- Work with your team to meet store shrink reduction goals (shrink is industry talk for lost inventory).
- Stay aware of safety around the store and keep things hazard free.
- You might get trained in other areas of the store too depending on what's needed that day or week.
Who they need
The original posting says "You." And honestly that sums it up well enough. But let me unpack what that actually means in practice:
- Clerical customer service skills matter ; retail experience helps a lot but isn't strictly required if you're good with people already.
- Scheduling needs to be flexible because retail hours are not always 9 to 5. Weekends? Probably. Evenings? Maybe. Nights? Possibly during holidays or seasonal pushes.
- Strong communication skills are important but so is organizing your own work flow without someone hovering over you telling you what to do next.
- Multi tasking isn't optional here ; you'll juggle customers coming in one direction while boxes come from another direction while keeping aisles clean all afternoon long.
- Able to adjust when plans change suddenly or customers throw curveballs (they will sometimes). No being rigid about exactly how things go minute to minute .
- Able lift heavy objects without worrying about hurting yourself; reasonable accommodation applies if needed though .
- The start pay & benefits
