About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this Resident II RN role at Wesley Woodlawn Hospital & ER in Wichita, KS. This is for a new graduate nurse, so no prior experience is required. You'll start on the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), which is a step down from ICU. It's where you build the foundation to move into critical care.
What You'll Be Doing
The work is direct patient care. You're assessing patients, administering medications, and monitoring how they respond to treatments. You'll use established nursing models like "Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage" as your guide.
- Your documentation needs to be prompt and accurate. That means charting conditions, the care you give, and how patients react.
- You're watching for changes in status. If something shifts or a treatment isn't working as expected, you report it to the provider and intervene.
- This isn't a solo job. You're part of a multidisciplinary team with doctors, therapists, and other support staff working together on patient centered care.
- A big part of the role is patient education. You'll explain conditions, walk through treatment plans and medications; including potential side effects; and go over what needs to happen after discharge.
- The unit focuses on clinical excellence through evidence based practices. You'll participate in things like SAFETY rounding, using communication fundamentals (AIDET), the Teach Back method, and narrating care to improve patient experience and outcomes.
The Path Forward
This resident role is designed as your launchpad into critical care nursing. The goal is to develop your skills so you can eventually handle patients with serious, life threatening illnesses and injuries in the ICU.
You’ll build expertise managing potent IV drips and interpreting complex lab results. Over time, you’ll learn to operate advanced equipment like ventilators, ECMO machines (for heart/lung support), and CRRT machines (for continuous kidney therapy).
You’ll work with greater autonomy under standing physician orders and protocols. And you’ll learn how to support not just patients but their families; helping them understand difficult prognoses, cope with fear and grief, and navigate end of life conversations when necessary.
Critical care never stops advancing. So neither does the learning; from updated ICU protocols to new medical technology.
What We Need From You
- A current RN license or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse.
- An Associate Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
- A Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification. If you don't have it yet, you need to get it within 30 days of starting.
- No prior nursing experience is required; this is an entry level position for new grads.
- The role doesn't involve any travel requirements.
