About This Role

What You'll Do

You'll assist a physician during routine and complex invasive procedures in the cath lab. That means cardiac catheterizations, vascular angioplasties, structural heart work, and other interventional cases. You're scrubbing in with them, handing off catheters, balloons, guide wires ; whatever they need as the case moves along.

Before the procedure starts you prepare and clean the site and drape it to maintain a sterile field. This follows AORN standards. You enter patient data into the computer and hook up EKG leads plus a pulse oximeter monitor.

During the procedure you keep an eye on ECG, blood pressure, and other hemodynamic parameters inside the CCL. You might assist with an intra aortic balloon pump or other cardiac assist devices. You also set up and remove arterial and venous lines when needed ; not just in the CCL but also in the CCU or ICU.

You draw arterial blood gases if a physician requests them. You run activated coagulation time tests so you know when it's safe to pull arterial or venous sheaths. When a patient needs to be moved you accompany them and monitor their condition during transport.

After each case you clean the room, arrange equipment back where it belongs, stock supplies for next time. You maintain inventory of things like catheters, defibrillators, monitors, temporary pacemakers. And you supply external pacemakers to different hospital locations as needed.

Documentation is part of every step: before, during, after each procedure you log required data and enter codes charges equipment used into the computer for billing reports. When a patient leaves the procedure room you discharge or transport them. You explain post procedure site care instructions and precautions to them directly.

You give family members updates about what happened according to department policy. And if there's bleeding at the cath site afterward ; or hematoma pain loss of distal pulse ; you respond appropriately document findings and how it got resolved.
