About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this Occupational Therapist opening with MedStar Health in Washington, DC. This isn't a desk job. You're going into people's homes, figuring out what they need to live more independently, and then making it happen. It's hands on, it's personal, and you're the one calling the shots on your caseload.
What you'll be doing
You're the primary therapist for your patients. You'll do the initial evaluation; interviewing them, observing movement, checking strength and sensation; and build a treatment plan with their doctor and family. Then you execute it. That means teaching exercises, working on mobility and safety at home, recommending equipment or home modifications, and constantly checking if the plan is still right for them.
- Manage your own schedule of patient visits and keep everyone in the loop: the patient, their family, your supervisor.
- Your documentation needs to be sharp. Admission notes within 48 hours, daily notes within 24.
- Figure out when a patient is ready to move on and connect them with community resources for discharge.
- You'll use all the standard tools and modalities: goniometers for measuring joints, therapeutic exercise programs, even ultrasound or heat/cold therapy.
- Be ready to jump into case conferences with other care team members. Your voice matters in planning.
What you need to bring
The non negotiables first. You need a specific graduate degree and state licensure to even walk in the door.
- A Master's degree from an ACOTE accredited Occupational Therapy program.
- A current license to practice OT in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia (or a combo based on where you're working).
- A valid driver's license in good standing and a reliable car. This is a driving job visiting patients at home.
- CPR certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 90 days of starting.
- At least 1 2 years of clinical experience under your belt. You should be comfortable working independently.
The practical stuff
This is a full time position. You'll manage your own patient assignments and productivity based on how complex their needs are. There's mandatory training each year on things like the Code of Conduct. And part of being here is pitching in; you might serve on a committee or help with community outreach events now and then.
