About This Role
What makes this NICU different
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Neonatal ICU is a 36 bed Level IV unit ; the highest designation there is. It's one of only two Level IV NICUs in Washington, D.C., and it's housed inside a five time Magnet® designated hospital. This is the only NICU in the D.C. region where Clinical Nurses can participate in high risk deliveries, train as an ECMO tech, and join flight or ground transport teams. It's the major referral center for all MedStar facilities and multiple community hospitals across the tri state area.
You'll see diagnoses like Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Extreme Prematurity, Neonatal Encephalopathy, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension, Sepsis/Septic Shock, Neurological Disorders, Genetic and/or Metabolic Disorders, Gastrointestinal Disorders, and surgical needs. The unit offers ECMO, Total Body Therapeutic Hypothermia, Bedside Patent Ductus Arteriosus Ligation, Inhaled Nitric Oxide, High Frequency Oscillator Ventilation, and High Frequency Jet Ventilation.
The nursing staff runs the show through Shared Governance and a Clinical Advancement Program. Clinical Nurses lead the Parent Advisory Support Group, Practice Council, Scheduling Committee, Bereavement Committee, and Developmental Care Committee.
