What You'll Do as a Lactation Consultant at MedStar Georgetown
You're the expert families turn to during one of the most critical times in their lives. In this role, you'll provide lactation assessment, management, education, and instruction to inpatient lactating women and community based outpatients. That includes consultations, rental or sale of equipment and supplies, telephone triage, and prenatal education when it's appropriate.
Your job is to create an environment that builds confidence and supports adult learning. You'll protect confidentiality while promoting lactation management for the mother infant dyad and their families. Everything you do follows research based evidence, the ILCA Standards & Scope of Practice, the IBLCE Code of Ethics, and nursing standards within our interdisciplinary team here at GUH.
The Unit
MedStar Georgetown's Perinatal Department includes a Labor & Delivery/Inpatient Antepartum Suite plus a Mother Baby Couplet Postpartum Unit. It's a family centered, holistic environment designed for changing needs. We're a regional referral center for high risk mothers and infants with a supportive relationship with our Level IV NICU ; that means excellent continuity of care for these families. Our patient population is diverse: some medically complex, some uncomplicated.

What You Need
- A BSN or MSN from an accredited School of Nursing
- Active DC RN License upon hire
- IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) certification required
- At least 2 years of experience as a lactation consultant ; though we'll consider a comparable mix of nursing and lactation consultant experience
- Inpatient hospital based lactation consultant experience is preferred but not required
The Schedule and Pay
This position offers flexible PRN scheduling with various shift options available. The hiring range is $41.98 to $75.62 per hour.
