This isn't just about following a recipe; you are the person who makes sure the kids get meals that are good for them and that they'll actually eat. What You'll Actually Do
Planning, prep, and keeping the kitchen running.
- You need to know the state's nutritional requirements for kids. No guessing.
- Plan and post approved menus that are nutritionally sound, and make smart substitutions when you have to.
- Keep accurate inventory records and place food orders that stay within the center's food budget.
- Chop, cut, prepare, and serve food based on how many kids show up that day.
- Serve food at the right temperature and in containers that are safe for the classroom.
- Store all food, supplies, and equipment safely according to state and local rules.
- Keep accurate meal and snack counts for CACFP guidelines, if that applies here.
Safety and cleanliness are non negotiable.
- Follow health, hygiene, and safety procedures, including proper lifting and handwashing techniques.
- Empty and sanitize trash receptacles regularly.
- Wash and sanitize all dishes and cookware using approved methods.
- Clean and maintain kitchen appliances like refrigerators, microwaves, and can openers.
- Clean counters, shelves, and handle spills as they happen.
- Know and follow emergency procedures for any scenario.
The other stuff.
- Ask for help when you need it, and keep a positive attitude.
- Foster respectful relationships with regulators and the rest of the staff.
- Work with others to keep the vibe harmonious.
- Handle routine situations with good judgment and flexibility.
- Support group decisions and show team spirit.
- Build friendly rapport with families and give great customer service.
- Do food shopping when needed, and help in classrooms if they need an extra hand.
- Handle other duties as assigned.
What You Need to Bring
The basics.
- At least 18 years old.
- High School Diploma or GED required. ECE coursework is preferred.
- Relevant experience in a licensed childcare facility kitchen, a commercial kitchen, a public school cafeteria, or something equivalent.
- Must meet all state specific guidelines for the role.
- A valid food service handler's permit or license, as required by your state or local regulations.
- Follow all state and federal regulations, including immunizations, physicals, and training requirements.
How you work with kids.
- Use sound judgment to spot and address risks in a childcare setting.
- Keep children safe and meet their needs: diapering, dressing, grooming, feeding.
- Model and promote positive social behaviors and clear communication.
- Support development through engaging, age appropriate activities.
- Maintain composure, patience, and professionalism at all times.
Physical stuff.
- Full range of motion: stand and walk for extended periods.
- Lift and carry up to 40 pounds safely.
- Reach, stretch, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Store and retrieve food items from shelves at different heights using stools or ladders.
- Supervise children by sight and sound.
- Work outdoors in temperatures from 20°F to 95°F.
- Stay alert and energetic to perform all essential job functions.
