Ambulatory Care Specialist

Trenton, NJ

About This Role

Job Overview

Ambulatory care is where most people get their healthcare these days. As an Ambulatory Care Specialist, you're the one making sure that care happens smoothly across clinics and outpatient centers in Trenton, NJ. You'll coordinate patient visits, manage referrals, and work with physicians to keep things running without a hitch. It's a role that requires both clinical knowledge and organizational savvy ; you need to understand the medical side, but also thrive on logistics and communication.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Patient coordination: Schedule appointments, pre visit planning, and follow up calls. You'll make sure no one falls through the cracks between visits.
  • Clinical support: Room patients, take vitals, and document histories. You're the first person they see, and you set the tone for their appointment.
  • Care transitions: Manage referrals to specialists and coordinate with hospitals when patients need higher level care. You'll track those referrals to ensure they're completed.
  • Data entry & record keeping: Update electronic health records (EHRs) accurately and quickly. Every detail matters ; medication lists, allergies, immunization records.
  • Patient education: Explain treatment plans, medication instructions, and preventive care in plain language. Some patients are anxious or confused ; you're the calm voice that clarifies things.
  • Quality measures: Help clinics meet their quality targets ; things like cancer screening rates, diabetes control, and immunization compliance. You'll run reports and nudge patients when they're overdue.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. A certificate in medical assisting, nursing assistant training, or a related healthcare program is strongly preferred.
  • Certification: BLS (CPR) certification is usually required. Many employers also want CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) or CNA credentials.
  • Experience: At least one year working in a clinic, doctor's office, or ambulatory care setting. If you've done front desk and back office work, that's a big plus.
  • Technical skills: Comfortable with EHR systems like Epic, Cerner, or eClinicalWorks. You should be able to type at least 40 words per minute without errors.
  • Physical demands: On your feet for long stretches. You'll walk between exam rooms, lift medical supplies (up to 25 lbs), and assist patients who need help moving.
  • Soft skills: You have to stay cool when things get hectic. Patients can be upset, schedules run late, and doctors get grumpy ; you keep your composure and solve problems anyway.

What It's Like In This Role

You'll work in an outpatient clinic, typically with 3–6 physicians or advanced practice providers. The pace is steady ; some days are quiet, others are a blur of phone calls, walk ins, and urgent requests. You'll use an EHR all day, along with phone systems and sometimes a patient portal. Most roles in Trenton, NJ are full time, 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, though some clinics offer 4 day weeks or occasional Saturdays. The team is tight knit ; you'll rely on the medical assistants, nurses, and front desk staff to share the load.

Why You'll Like This Opportunity

This job gives you real variety. No two days are exactly the same, and you're constantly learning from the providers you work with. Many positions in Trenton, NJ offer flexible schedules or part time options if you're balancing school or family. The clinical experience you gain here can be a stepping stone to nursing, PA school, healthcare administration, or specialized roles in case management. Since job orders come from multiple employers, you can find the setting that fits your style ; a small private practice, a large health system, or a community health center.

Schedule & Work Type

Most openings in Trenton, NJ are for full time positions, typically 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Part time and per diem roles are posted as well, especially for evenings and weekends. You'll find both onsite and hybrid options, though direct patient contact means you can't do this job from home entirely. Shift lengths vary ; some clinics use 10 hour days with a 3 day weekend.
