About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this role. It's for a Safety Engineer or EOSH Specialist supporting the FAA at their Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Tampa, FL. You'll be the technical point person for keeping the work environment safe and compliant. The core of it is implementing and maintaining their Environmental Occupational Safety & Health Management System (EOSHMS), which follows ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
What you'll do
Your day to day will be a mix of proactive checks, reactive investigations, and program support. It's hands on and analytical.
- Run safety programs like inspections for exterior building areas (looking at slip, trip, and fall hazards), fall protection systems, and hoist/rigging operations.
- Walk through facilities to spot potential hazards and verify everything meets OSHA and other safety rules.
- Plan and run emergency evacuation drills to make sure everyone knows the plan.
- When new equipment or facilities are on the drawing board, you'll review the plans to ensure safety is baked in from the start.
- A big part of the job is getting out in the field. You'll observe activities like trenching and shoring, scaffolding setup, electrical work, crane lifts, and general maintenance to ensure safe practices are followed.
- If an accident or incident happens, you're on it. You'll investigate, figure out the root cause, and recommend how to prevent it from happening again.
- Perform safety audits to keep our EOSHMS on track with compliance goals.
- Develop and update our safety procedures, processes, and standards as things evolve.
- Your job is to find risks; to people, property, or the environment; and then figure out how to control or eliminate them.
- You won't work in a vacuum. You'll support teams across different disciplines to evaluate operational hazards together.
- Sometimes you'll need to dig into regulatory updates or technical guidance; other times you'll be sharing what you learn by training personnel.
- A lot of this work ends up on paper. You'll prepare documentation and reports that back up our EOSHMS efforts and prove we're meeting requirements.
The basics we need
A few non negotiables here before we get started. First off: you must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident who can obtain a Public Trust clearance. That's mandatory for access.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or something closely related. If your experience is strong enough without the exact degree title? We can consider an equivalent combo of education and experience instead.
- At least five years doing relevant work in this field. Got a Master’s degree? Then we can talk with three years of experience instead of five.
- You've got direct experience with occupational safety programs; environmental compliance; or industrial hygiene work counts too.
- The practical side matters: conducting inspections; running audits; investigating incidents; you've done some version of this before.
- A solid working knowledge of OSHA regulations is essential.
- The most important skill might be spotting problems before they happen: identifying hazards in operational settings isn't just about checking boxes; it's about knowing what corrective actions will actually stick.
The stuff that makes us say "yes" faster
These aren't required but if any apply they give us more confidence right away:
- A background supporting federal agencies like the FAA or DoD.
- Hands on familiarity with ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 management systems. A professional certification such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional); CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist); CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager); anything similar carries weight. Specific construction safety know how; fall protection; scaffolding; cranes; hoists; is incredibly useful here. Knowledge beyond OSHA: understanding EPA rules or state level environmental regulations helps round out your perspective. Experience developing content for safety training sessions; and then delivering that training effectively; is valuable.
