Alright, let's talk about this Packaging Engineer role. It's not just about boxes and shrink wrap; it's the engineering behind getting a bottle or can from our line to a store shelf without a scratch. You'd be the person figuring out how to make that happen efficiently, reliably, and cost effectively. The job is based in Tampa, FL, reporting to the Director of Engineering.

What you'll be working on

You're developing, testing, and evaluating everything that holds our product; from the pallet load down to the secondary packaging. Your main goal is making sure designs work with our machines and survive shipping, all while hitting quality and cost targets.

  • Run projects from start to finish, documenting each step. You'll handle several assignments at once with a moderate level of oversight.
  • Act as the Project Packaging Engineer, focusing on primary and secondary packaging systems.
  • Troubleshoot packaging issues with designs, materials, or processes. We need creative and practical solutions.
  • Find ways to cut costs or avoid them altogether through redesigns, consolidating components, or improving line efficiency.
  • Work directly with commercial teams, purchasing managers, and suppliers to translate customer needs into clear internal briefs.
  • Coordinate qualification tests with program managers, plants, quality teams, and suppliers.
  • Get alignment across different teams on project scope, trial plans, budgets, and results.
  • Manage material procurement with purchasing to keep projects on their critical path.
  • Schedule and run experimental trials yourself when needed; document everything thoroughly.
  • Support sales by visiting customers to resolve packaging or damage problems onsite.
  • Handle daily tasks in our ACE workflow: answer packaging inquiries, create pallet specs, complete customer data sheets within 48 hours (or an agreed timeframe).
  • Help develop Bills of Materials and run cost analyses.
  • Every quarter, you'll validate the accuracy of our plant capability databases and packaging specifications.

The technical side of things

A big part of this is digging into the details and building things up from prototypes.

  • Analyze engineering drawings and material specs for physical traits, handling needs, safety requirements; the whole picture.
  • Build prototypes using materials like flexible film, corrugated board folding cartons pressure sensitive labels plastic films whatever's appropriate for the job
  • Consult with our legal counsel on potential patent or liability issues for new designs.
  • Interview packaging material suppliers; alongside purchasing you'll help pick the best options.
  • Attend industry events to stay sharp on emerging tech trends environmental standards regulatory shifts.
  • Catalogue an innovation portfolio keep a library of concepts prototypes
