
About This Role
The Role
Leidos needs a Mechanical Engineer for the NISC IV Program in the Eastern Service Area. This isn't a desk only job. You'll travel about 25% of the time to FAA facilities, doing real on site work.
What You'll Actually Do
- Design HVAC, HVAC controls, chillers, boilers, water distribution, ductwork, plumbing, and fire protection systems for FAA facilities.
- Conduct on site surveys to develop "to scale" designs and detailed reports.
- Generate sketches showing how proposed installations fit into existing or new facilities, with exact specs and dimensions.
- Participate in construction inspections and final inspections.
- Confer with engineering staff and other personnel to identify and solve design or implementation problems.
- Coordinate design components with a multi disciplinary team for site specific modifications and new construction.
- Prepare AutoCAD construction drawings, site specific specs, contract documents, and independent cost estimates.
- Handle project management tasks and communication, including safety plans, sequence of work, and cutover plans.
- Generate and coordinate Integrated Risk Management Checklists (IRMC), communication plans, and project risk registers to meet Operational Risk Management (ORM) requirements.
- Coordinate and complete Work Permits for potential lead or asbestos impact during construction.
- Attend pre construction meetings and on site construction meetings with stakeholders to coordinate with other ongoing projects.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate construction project activities to hit milestones and deadlines, working directly with stakeholders and contractors.
- Manage and participate in on site cutovers, testing, and restoration of facilities.
- Prepare, maintain, and provide periodic project updates to your team, management, and stakeholders.
- Manage multiple projects toward successful on time completion.
- Review contractor design and construction submittals.
- Perform internal design reviews of FAA designed Terminal Engineering projects.
- Track, reconcile, and coordinate closure of JAI project exceptions.
- Review project deliverables and communicate findings verbally and in writing.
- Provide and coordinate timely responses to project RFIs (Requests for Information) and related submittals.
- Monitor project progress and stakeholder needs.
- Work independently to evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques and procedures, using judgment to adapt and modify designs.
What You Need to Bring
- A Mechanical Engineering degree from an accredited college or university.
- At least 4 years of experience designing mechanical systems ; HVAC and plumbing ; for commercial, industrial, or government facilities.
- Current, working knowledge of building and energy codes so you can perform heating and cooling load calculations, ductwork sizing and layout, piping calculations and distribution, sections/elevations, and equipment sizing and selection.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and engineering scheduling tools. You should also be comfortable using the internet for gathering and communicating information.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or MicroStation.
- Clear written and verbal communication, whether in person or virtual (via Teams or Zoom).
- The ability to write clear, concise general and technical reports and coordinate tactfully with a variety of project stakeholders, peers, and management levels.
- The ability to maintain an electronic project folder related to site preparation and equipment installation problems.
- You'll provide technical assistance and recommendations for closing construction punch list items.
- Must be able to conduct efficient, organized data gathering and analysis.
- Ability to develop project plans, establish project schedules, and project estimates. Provide organized documentation.
- Must be able to work independently within a large engineering organization.
- Basic knowledge of multiple disciplines regarding their general requirements for typical standard projects.
- Ability to discuss project items with stakeholders, contractors, and code authorities (AHJ).
- Must be able to work in a team environment.
- You must be able to obtain and maintain FAA Public Trust Suitability.
Compensation & Benefits
Pay range: $72,000 to $130,000. This range reflects the typical low and high for this role in the Eastern Service Area. Individual pay will be based on your skills, experience, and location.
