About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this Director of Finance role. It's a senior position reporting directly to the CFO and sitting on the Operations Leadership Team. You'll be based in person at our school in Tacoma, WA; we've found that having key operations staff visible really helps build connections across the community.

What you'll do

You're leading the business office. That means overseeing its day to day operations and, just as importantly, supporting the growth and professional development of your team.

  • You own the annual budgeting process, budget monitoring, and financial analysis. We're always looking to improve these systems, so that's part of your mandate.
  • Managing cash flow is a big one. You'll create the cash management plan and handle our overall cash position.
  • A major project involves developing and managing an integrated, automated financial management information system. This goes hand in hand with establishing a robust system of internal controls for accounting, cash handling, and other business functions.
  • You'll prepare all materials for our annual audit and for reports to the Board and its committees (Audit and Finance). Expect to participate in those board meetings.
  • Maintaining accurate financial records is non negotiable. You'll be responsible for preparing all required reports; quarterly ones, plus any ad hoc analyses that come up.
  • We need you to partner with school leaders and department budget managers. Your job is to help them understand their budgets and analyze their financial data effectively.
  • Setting policies is part of the deal. That includes credit, collections, purchasing, and schedules for paying our bills.
  • You'll review all of the school's financial and accounting related policies and procedures.
  • Finally, you oversee the preparation and filing of all income tax returns and other mandatory financial reports for the school.

The background you bring

This isn't just about crunching numbers; it's about strategic thinking and collaborative leadership. You're someone who stewards progress toward long term goals.

  • You need at least 7 to 10 years of direct experience in school business operations. Specific expertise in fund accounting and non profit accounting is essential.
  • A Master’s Degree in Business Management or a closely related field is strongly preferred.
  • We need someone who has managed large teams before. Experience with sizable programs is also important.
  • Your communication skills have to be top notch; both written and oral. You can interact effectively with every personality type and level of management within an organization.
  • Being an effective relationship builder is key. Having existing local, regional, or even national connections would be a definite plus.
