Registered Nurse
About This Role
Just graduated in May or June? This one's for you.
HCA Florida St. Petersburg Hospital is hiring new graduate nurses for their New Nurse Residency Program in St. Petersburg, FL. It's a paid, year long program built to help you move from the classroom to the bedside. You won't be doing it alone; you'll have educators, experienced nurses, and other residents around you the whole time.
The Job
You're stepping into a registered nurse role from day one. You'll coordinate and deliver care based on your unit's specific needs and your state's standards of practice. The work follows an "Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage" model. Think of yourself as the main point of contact for your patients and their families, making sure their experience is the best it can be.
- Your shift starts with an assessment when a patient is admitted, and you reassess each shift after that. You're watching for any changes and reporting them.
- A big part of your day involves performing procedures or monitoring patients as doctors order.
- Everything you do gets documented in the medical record promptly.
- You'll administer medications and keep a close eye on how patients respond to them. If there's an unintended reaction, you notify the provider and intervene.
- Responding quickly to patient requests is standard. The goal is to anticipate what they might need before they have to ask.
- You'll teach patients and their families about conditions, treatment plans, medications; including potential side effects; and what follow up looks like. This means translating complex medical info into terms everyone can understand.
The Residency Program Details
This isn't just any orientation. The program gives you structured support during that first critical year.
- You get advanced clinical training focused on a specific specialty area.
- There are monthly educational sessions to build your knowledge base.
- You'll train alongside a preceptor assigned by the hospital.
- The program uses hands on simulations to measure and evaluate your growing skillset.
- Experienced nurse leaders will be there to mentor you.
- You'll even work with others on an evidence based practice project.
What You Need to Have
- A Graduate Nurse license or a Registered Nurse license in the state of Florida.
- An Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited school is required. No previous nursing experience is needed; that’s what the residency is for.
- You must obtain Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of starting the job.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification needs to be obtained within your first year of employment.
- The hospital notes that other certifications could become required during your employment here. Some travel for training might also come up.
