Gastroenterologist

Springfield, MA

About This Role

Job Overview

This Gastroenterologist role in Springfield, MA centers on diagnosing and treating disorders of the digestive system. You'll handle everything from routine colonoscopies to managing complex cases like inflammatory bowel disease or liver conditions. The setting is typically a hospital or a specialty clinic, working alongside surgeons and primary care doctors. It's a demanding specialty, but one where you directly improve patients' quality of life over the long term.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform endoscopic procedures. Colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, and ERCPs are the core of the job. You'll interpret findings and take biopsies or remove polyps as needed.
  • Manage inpatient consults. The hospital will call you for GI bleeds, jaundice, or acute pancreatitis. You'll stabilize patients and coordinate follow ups.
  • See patients in the clinic. That means diagnosing chronic conditions like GERD, IBS, and hepatitis. You'll develop treatment plans and monitor progress.
  • Interpret imaging and lab results. You'll read CT scans, MRIs, and pathology reports daily. Your decisions hinge on those details.
  • Communicate with referring docs. Primary care physicians need clear answers from you. You'll write concise consult notes and talk through complex cases.

Requirements

  • Medical degree and residency. You're board certified or board eligible in Gastroenterology. Fellowship training is a given.
  • State license. An active and unrestricted medical license in Springfield, MA is non negotiable. DEA registration too.
  • Procedural competence. You've done enough scopes to work independently. Volume counts here ; no one wants an inexperienced operator.
  • Physical stamina. Standing for long procedures is part of the routine. You'll also need fine motor control for delicate maneuvers.
  • Emotional steadiness. Patients can be scared or in pain. You stay calm and direct without being cold.

What It's Like in This Role

Days start early, often with a block of procedures scheduled back to back. The endoscopy suite is your main stage. You'll work with a dedicated team of nurses and techs who know your preferences. Clinic afternoons are more conversational ; slower paced but intellectually demanding. You'll use an EMR for charting, and you're expected to document efficiently. Between seeing 15 to 25 patients and handling urgent call ins, it's a full plate. But the variety keeps it from getting stale.

Why You'll Like This Opportunity

Hospitals and groups across Springfield, MA are actively recruiting, so you're not locked into one model. Some offer partnership tracks, others want part time or locums coverage. You can shape the job around your lifestyle. CME funds and malpractice insurance are typically included, and many employers support research or teaching if that interests you. The field is always advancing ; new biologics, new scopes ; so you'll never stop learning.

Schedule & Work Type

Full time positions are standard, usually 4 to 5 days a week plus weekend call rotation. Part time arrangements exist but are less common. This is an onsite role; telemedicine follow ups happen, but procedures require your physical presence.
