Medical Lab Technician

The Role

Avera Health is looking for a Medical Lab Technician to join the lab team at the Sioux Falls, SD campus. You'll be running a variety of clinical lab tests, keeping the instruments working right, and making sure results are accurate. This is a role where you get to use both your technical skills and your judgment every day.

What You'll Actually Do

• Run basic and complex clinical lab tests following established procedures, protocols, and manufacturer guidelines.
• Handle the day to day operations of lab instruments and disciplines ; think supply inventory, quality control, calibration, and reagent prep.
• Flag results that look off or unusual, use your critical thinking to figure out what's going on, then take corrective action with help from the MLS or supervisor when needed.
• Share lab data and technical information with other departments, healthcare providers, and individuals ; both verbally and electronically.
• Participate in lab CQI projects and other activities as they come up.
• Teach others about proper pre analytical specimen collection, handling, and storage for different body fluids. You might also collect specimens yourself.
• Prioritize your own workflow and keep things running efficiently.

Schedule

This position works a 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM shift. You'll rotate through every 5th weekend and cover rotating holidays too. It's primarily days, but the weekend and holiday rotation is part of the deal.

What You Need to Bring

• An associate's degree (or technical certificate) in Medical Laboratory Technology.
• You'll need to get your MLT certification through AMT or ASCP within one year of being hired.
• If you have 1–3 years of related experience or training, that's preferred but not required.
• You also need visual acuity good enough to do the job, and the ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds.

Certification Details

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification through either the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is required within 1 year of hire. No exceptions on that timeline.

Pay and Bonuses

Pay ranges from $24.00 to $44.00 per hour, depending on your experience. There's also a sign on bonus available: $10,000 for MLTs with a 2 year commitment. If you're an MLS, that bumps up to $15,000 with a 3 year commitment.
