About This Role
Got a technical mind and a practical attitude? CalPortland needs someone in Seattle, WA who can bridge the gap between the lab, the plant, and the job site. You'll be working directly with the Quality Director, but you're the one who makes sure everything on the ground meets spec.
What you'll do
Your day is split between analysis, coordination, and getting your hands dirty. It's a mix of office work and field time.
- Review project specs and recommend concrete mix designs for our sales team to bid jobs.
- You're preparing project submittals and entering all the critical data into our Stonemont system.
- A big part of this is analyzing test reports; compressive strength, gradations; to figure out how to optimize a mix's performance.
- When there's a problem or a customer complaint on a project, you handle it and find the solution.
- Schedule the daily duties for our field technicians.
- Attend pre job meetings to flag any potential quality issues before we pour.
- You'll conduct aggregate testing following ASTM methods and assist with trial batches, which means preparing materials and running ACI tests.
- The lab is your domain too; that means keeping it clean, managing inventory, and maintaining all the equipment calibrations for both lab and field gear.
- You coordinate constantly with other regional managers in Sales, Operations, Customer Service, and Dispatch to make sure we're serving the customer right.
What you need to bring
We need someone who gets concrete from both a scientific and a production standpoint. This isn't just a desk job.
- A degree in Concrete Management or Civil Engineering is preferred. But if you've got at least 5 years of direct experience in this field, that works too.
- You have to know concrete and aggregate testing inside out, according to current ASTM and AASHTO standards.
- Previous supervisory experience is required. You'll be directing field techs.
- A solid grasp of Microsoft Office basics; Outlook, Word, Excel; is non negotiable.
- Your math and analytical skills need to be sharp. Attention to detail is everything here.
- The role requires lifting up to 75 lbs. You'll be working outside in all sorts of weather conditions.
- The physical side is real: climbing, bending, squatting, stretching. You'll use hand tools like wrenches and screwdrivers. Driving over rough terrain is part of it too.
- A valid driver's license with a clean DMV record is mandatory for this position.
