What You'll Be Doing

This is a full time Retail Sales Associate role at Smart Foodservice Stores LLC in San Jose, CA. You'll work 30 to 40 hours each week. Weekends and holidays are part of the schedule, and you'll need flexibility for opening and closing shifts. The pay starts at $17.69 per hour.

At the front end, you'll handle sales and cash functions in the POS system. That means scanning merchandise with a handheld scan gun or 10 keypad, weighing items on countertop scales, and looking up products that won't scan. Every barcode needs to be right in the system ; if something's off, you report it to the Front End Lead or Manager of Day. You'll also do cart to cart transfers at checkout and visually inspect each item for tampering. Receipt checking is part of the job too, verifying what's in the cart against what was purchased as customers leave. And depending on your shift, you'll help open or close the front end.

On the sales floor, you're focused on increasing sales and keeping shrinkage low. You'll help customers find what they need and let them know about other services in the store. Stocking shelves is a big part of it ; receiving inventory, keeping everything neat, rotating product properly, and checking quality. If stock gets low, you let management know. You'll label merchandise too, using blaster tags for items that won't scan, catch weight labels for things sold by the pound, and PLU tags for produce. Every day you'll replenish the sales floor by bringing freight down from top stock, always grabbing the oldest product first (that's FIFO). You'll use reach trucks and pallet jacks to move stuff. Some computer work comes in too ; Microsoft Word, Excel, and the store's proprietary software. You might help with price changes directed by the Pricing Lead or Store Management, and you'll participate in inventory and cycle counts as needed.

Keeping the place clean and safe is non negotiable. That means following safety policies, flagging any issues to management, and handling cleanup yourself if you can. You'll keep the sales floor, front end, restrooms, parking lot, and entry area tidy. There's cleaning equipment to help with that. You'll also gather carts from the parking lot and cart corrals, making sure they're clean and work properly.

Other duties may come up as assigned by store management. That's just how it goes.

What You'll Need

Experience wise, you need at least 6 to 12 months of retail cashier or stocking experience. One year of retail selling or customer service is preferred but not required. No certifications or licenses are needed for this role.

• You have basic computer skills and some cash handling experience.

Physical Stuff You Should Know

Freight handling is a big part of this job. You'll do repetitive lifts of 40 to 80 pounds. You'll also work in freezers and coolers ; the temperature in the store can range from -10 degrees to 85 degrees.

You'll be on your feet, on level surfaces mostly, but you might use a ladder or work on an elevated surface occasionally. You'll need to physically interact with customers. The noise level is usually moderate. And since the store is open to the public, you're exposed to outside weather ; including inclement weather.

Internally, you'll interact with employees at every level across the company. Externally, it's all about customers and the people providing services and products to the store.
