About This Role

The Gig

Smart Foodservice Stores LLC needs a Cashier for their San Jose, CA store. This is a full time gig, 30 to 40 hours a week. You'll work weekends and holidays, and your schedule will flex between opening and closing shifts. The pay starts at $17.69 an hour.

What You'll Actually Do

Front End Stuff

  • Make sure every customer walking through the doors has a ridiculously good experience. That means building relationships and using everything you learn in the CHEF'STORE Way training.
  • Handle sales and cash transactions through the POS system. You'll scan items with a hand held gun or 10 key pad, weigh product on countertop scales, and manually look up anything that won't scan. If a barcode is off, flag it to the Front End Lead or the Manager of Day.
  • Do cart to cart transfers at checkout. That includes checking each product for signs of tampering.
  • Work as a receipt checker too, matching cart contents to receipts as folks leave.
  • Handle opening and closing duties at the front end, depending on your shift.

Sales Floor and Stocking

  • Keep an eye on sales and shrinkage. Help customers find what they need and let them know about other services in the store.
  • Help unload inventory shipments. Stock shelves neatly, rotate product, and check quality. Tell store management if stock is running low.
  • Label all merchandise correctly. That means blaster tagging stuff that won't scan, slapping catch weight labels on items sold by the pound, and affixing PLU tags to produce.
  • Restock the sales floor daily by bringing freight down from top stock. Always pull the oldest product first and follow FIFO. Use reach trucks and pallet jacks to move things around. Each out product as needed.
  • Use Microsoft Word, Excel, and the company's proprietary software when the job calls for it.
  • Keep products easy to grab, looking good, and constantly available.
  • Help with price changes when the Pricing Lead or Store Management says so.
  • Assist with opening and closing the store.
  • Jump in on inventory and cycle counts as needed.

Customer Courtesy

  • Keep the facility well maintained and safe for everyone. Follow safety policies, and report any issues to management. Fix them if you can.
  • Clean the sales floor, front end, and restrooms. You'll use cleaning equipment for this.
  • Keep the parking lot and store entry area clean.
  • Gather carts from the parking lot and cart corrals, bring them back, and make sure they're clean and working right.
  • Store Management might ask you to do other stuff too. That's just how retail works.

Who You Are

  • You have at least 6 to 12 months of retail cashier or stocking experience. That's the minimum.
  • One year of retail selling or customer service experience is preferred but not strictly required.
  • You genuinely want to give customers fast, easy, efficient, and professional service.
  • You've got good common sense, think logically, and can handle basic math.
  • You're motivated and self driven. You can juggle multiple tasks, prioritize, and work alone or with a team.
  • Your schedule is flexible. You're cool with working holidays and weekends.
  • You have basic computer skills and cash handling experience. And you can handle a printer.

The Physical Part

This job involves freight handling, meaning you'll repetitively lift 40 to 80 pounds. You'll work in freezers and coolers too, so the temperature can range from -10 to 85 degrees. You'll be on your feet, you'll use ladders or elevated surfaces sometimes, and you'll physically interact with customers. The noise level is usually moderate, and you'll be outside in the weather now and then.
