General Laborer

About This Role

Alright, let's get to it. This is a hands on maintenance role with the Red Cross in San Diego, CA. It's about keeping our facilities running and looking good, which directly supports the work we do in communities. If you're the kind of person who sees a problem and wants to fix it, this could be a solid fit.

The Work

You'll be the go to person for repairs and upkeep at our plant and office facilities. That means no two days are exactly alike. One day you might be patching drywall or painting; the next, you're troubleshooting an electrical issue or servicing a boiler.

  • General building maintenance is your main focus: fixing minor holes in walls, repairing concrete floors and sidewalks.
  • You'll handle basic installations and corrections across electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and structural areas.
  • The job involves operating and servicing mechanical equipment like motors, pumps, fans, chillers, and boilers.
  • There's outdoor work too. You'd maintain the grounds by planting flowerbeds, pruning trees and shrubs, watering lawns, and applying fertilizers or insecticides as needed.
  • Seasonal tasks include raking leaves and snow removal; using power equipment or a shovel; and applying de icing chemicals on walkways and roads.
  • You'll document your work as required by regulations and help estimate costs for materials for various projects.
  • Moving furniture or equipment around the facility is part of the job.
  • A big part of this is using blueprints, wiring diagrams, sketches, and specs to guide your work. You'll use all kinds of hand tools and power tools to test, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair things.
  • Safety procedures aren't just paperwork here; you perform all work according to established standards.

The Schedule & Logistics

This is a full time position based in San Diego, CA, but it isn't just one site. You'll need to drive our vehicle to other locations in the region as part of the job. There may also be on call duties required from time to time. Relocation assistance isn't available for this role.

What You Bring

We need someone who already knows their way around a toolbox. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; a trade license might be needed depending on the work.

  • A minimum of 3 years of related hands on experience is mandatory. That means real skill and knowledge in painting, HVAC systems, carpentry, plumbing (listed as "pluming" but we mean plumbing), masonry work (like brick/concrete), and basic electrical tasks.
  • A valid driver's license with a good record is non negotiable; you'll be driving for us. Previous experience driving a truck or bus is viewed favorably but not essential.
  • The ability to read technical drawings like blueprints or wiring diagrams is crucial for this level of work.

A Little Extra Goes A Long Way

The basics get you in the door. What makes someone really stand out?

  • Strong customer service skills make interactions smoother with everyone from staff to volunteers.
