Job Overview
This is a hands on role for someone who lives to fly and teach. As a Flight Instructor, you'll be shaping the next generation of pilots right here in San Diego, CA. Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducting ground and flight instruction for private pilot through commercial pilot students.
- Developing personalized lesson plans and tracking student progress meticulously.
- Performing pre- and post flight briefings that reinforce safety and learning objectives.
- Ensuring all training flights strictly adhere to FAA regulations and school safety protocols.
- Maintaining accurate training records and endorsements in student logbooks.
Requirements
- A current FAA Certified Flight Instructor certificate (CFI) is mandatory. A CFII or MEI is a major plus.
- You need solid experience; most employers look for at least 250 hours of total flight time as a minimum.
- A clean FAA medical certificate, usually first or second class.
- The ability to explain complex aerodynamic concepts in simple, clear terms. If you can't make stalls understandable, this isn't the job for you.
- You must stay calm under pressure. Managing student nerves while managing the aircraft is part of the deal.
What It's Like In This Role
The environment is part classroom, part cockpit. You'll split your time between briefing rooms and the flight line, working with a mix of other instructors, maintenance crews, and front desk staff. The primary tools are your knowledge, the aircraft (typically Cessna 172s or similar trainers), and digital logbook software like ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot. Schedules are built around daylight and weather; expect early mornings, weekend work, and days where you're grounded waiting for clouds to clear.
