About This Role

What you'll do here

You're going to teach music. That's the heart of it. We handle the scheduling, billing, and admin so you can focus on your students.

Your main job is to build a space where learning feels engaging and supportive. You'll work with students of all ages and skill levels, from absolute beginners to more advanced players.

  • Teach private lessons in your instrument or voice.
  • Your relationship with students and parents matters. You'll keep communication open, set goals together, and share progress updates.
  • You aren't on an island. You'll coordinate with the store team to book lessons and help keep students inspired to continue.
  • Share what you know to help each student grow. It's about passing on that spark.

The background we need

A Bachelor's degree in Music Education or Performance is required. If you don't have the degree but have equivalent professional experience, that works too.

You also need at least two years of experience teaching music.

If you have these, even better

We're always impressed by deeper study or a long track record. These aren't mandatory, but they're a plus.

  • A Master's or Doctoral degree in Music.
  • Any professional teaching memberships or certifications you hold.
  • A lot of experience; think eight years or more. If you can teach multiple instruments from this list, that's a huge bonus: banjo, baritone, bass clarinet, bass guitar, bassoon, cello, clarinet, flute, French horn, guitar, mandolin, oboe, percussion, piano, piccolo, saxophone, string bass, trombone, trumpet, tuba, ukulele, viola, violin, and voice.

The practical details

The pay structure has two parts. You earn $12.00 per hour for any non teaching time at the store.

When you're teaching a lesson, your rate is between $10 and $20 per hour. That specific rate depends on your background and depth of experience.

A few perks worth mentioning

  • Gig Leave: This one is for the performers. You can take unpaid time off for tours or gigs and come back to your teaching position afterward.
  • 401K: We offer a plan with a company match.
  • Employee Discount: There's a program for discounts on gear.

A bit about us

The first Music & Arts opened in 1952 in Bethesda, MD. It was in a small house run by founder Benjamin O'Brien. He started with music lessons, dance lessons, and art supplies but quickly decided to focus only on music. That focus hasn't changed.

We grew over the decades through new stores and mergers, like joining with American Music in 2005. Now we're part of Guitar Center with over 225 stores across the country. The mission is still pretty simple: to create lifelong musicians and share the joy that comes from playing.

A note on pay:The listed rates comply with state laws; actual compensation depends on individual factors like experience and location. The posted range isn't a guarantee for every case.
