About This Role

What you'll do

You're the RN First Assistant for our Cardiovascular Operating Room. That means you're hands on, managing nursing care throughout the entire surgical process. You work directly with the surgeon, performing interventions under their direction and supervision.

It's a role built on communication. You'll collaborate constantly with physicians and the rest of the perioperative team to keep everything moving smoothly.

  • Function under the direction and supervision of the attending surgeon.
  • Maintain sterile technique; you open packs and instruments, then monitor the field throughout the procedure.
  • If there's a break in technique, you're the one to initiate corrective action right away.
  • A big part of your focus is helping maintain the patient's expected physiologic responses to surgery.
  • The practice scope is defined by hospital policy, your preparation, and your experience.

What you need to bring

A few things are non negotiable for this position. Check these off first.

  • A current Texas Registered Nurse license. If you have an active Multi State Compact License, you'll need to get a Texas RN license within 90 days of starting.
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required. There's one exception: if you were practicing as an RNFA before January 1, 2020, a Professional Associate or Diploma from a Nursing Program is acceptable instead.
  • You must have successfully finished an RNFA program that meets AORN standards and is accepted by the National Assistant at Surgery Certification (NASC).
  • At least two years of OR experience. CVOR experience is what we're looking for here in San Antonio, TX.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current ACLS certification.
