Speech Language Pathologist
About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this Speech Language Pathologist role at Spectrum Center. I've been placing folks in special education for over a decade, and this is one of the more substantial clinical positions I've seen come across my desk. It's not just about therapy sessions; it's about being the communication expert for an entire educational team.
The Work You'll Do
You're the speech expert on a K 12 special education team. Your core job is to build and run speech therapy programs that actually work for each student. That means you're designing the plan, doing the direct therapy, and tracking every bit of progress.
- Start with evaluations to figure out each student's strengths and needs.
- From there, you design and run individualized therapy programs. You're pulling from evidence based practices to build these.
- Your day involves direct instruction and prescriptive evaluation with the students.
- Writing IEP goals and interventions is a key part of the process. You own that piece.
- Then you monitor progress toward those goals, using data to make your decisions.
- You'll attend IEP meetings and collaborate with teachers and other specialists to weave communication goals into everything.
- A big part of success is working with parents or guardians. You'll consult with them and share practical strategies so skills carry over at home.
- You also coordinate with representatives from each student's home school district.
- All this requires detailed, timely documentation: session notes, progress reports, billing submissions within 24 hours of a session, and managing case records to stay compliant.
- You'll provide clinical guidance in both school and community settings.
- Partnering with other professionals; like OTs, PTs, and psychologists; is non negotiable. You're actively contributing to team meetings for integrated care planning.
- The role includes facilitating staff trainings and mentoring team members to spread best practices.
What You Need to Bring
They need a licensed clinician who knows their way around a special education setting. It's a specific environment.
- A Master's degree or higher in speech pathology or a very closely related field is required.
- You must be currently licensed as an SLP, or actively in the process of obtaining that credential.
- It's preferred if you have or are getting a CA state special education instruction credential.
- You need prior experience providing speech therapy to children. Experience in an alternative program, special education setting, or behavioral health program is a big plus.
- A deep understanding of special education services, compliance, IEPs, and effective teaching strategies is essential.
- You should be highly skilled in working with children who have learning disabilities.
- The job requires knowledge of classroom management systems and data based decision making.
- You must be able to obtain and maintain certification in the company's approved crisis management training program.
