The Job
Kaiser Permanente is looking for a Certified Nurse Midwife in Sacramento, CA to manage the care of low risk women through antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum stages. You'll handle routine pregnancies independently while working alongside CNMs and MDs on higher risk cases. It's a clinical role built on real autonomy, but with the full support of a medical team behind you.
What You'll Do
Your day covers the whole arc of maternity care. Here's how it breaks down:
Antepartum Care- Evaluate patients' general and obstetrical health, including determining pregnancy status, gestation duration, fetal presentation, position, and heart rate.
- Take a full medical, obstetrical, gynecological, and social history plus an account of the current pregnancy's course.
- Perform physical exams appropriate to CNM care, including pap smears, breast exams, and pelvic exams.
- Record all findings, histories, and observations in the patient's chart.
- Consult with the appropriate MD on anything abnormal.
- Order lab work and medical imaging as needed.
- Catch abnormal conditions early and institute preventive measures.
- Get help from ancillary services when it's needed.
- Teach, counsel, and guide individual patients on their health care. You'll also teach antepartum classes in individual facilities as needed.
- Evaluate each mother's general health and overall well being.
- Perform a medical screening exam to diagnose labor.
- Independently manage low risk women during labor and delivery, under physician supervision.
- Co manage higher risk patients when you, the CNM, and the MD decide that's appropriate.
- Follow facility specific standardized procedures.
- Evaluate each patient for the right pain management approach ; including requesting epidurals for women in labor.
- Provide health supervision and care after delivery.
- Teach family planning and prescribe contraception during the postpartum period.
What You Need to Bring
These are the must haves before your first day:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Certified Nurse Midwife (California) ; required at hire.
- Registered Nurse License (California) ; required at hire.
- National Provider Identifier ; required at hire.
- Basic Life Support ; required at hire.
- Drug Enforcement Administration Registration ; must get within 12 months of hire.
- Nurse Midwife National Certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board ; required at hire.
- You must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
What Will Help You Stand Out
- Three years of experience as a C.N.M. within the last three years.
- A current, valid California Nurse Midwife furnishing certification ; including any required pharmacy education. Didactic education and supervised clinical experience in third trimester limited obstetric ultrasound is preferred. If you don't have it yet, you'll need to get it at your own expense within one year of hire.
