CRNA

Kaiser Permanente·Sacramento, CA

About This Role

What you'll do as a CRNA at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento, CA

You select and administer intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics before and during surgical or medical procedures. You're part of the anesthesia care team and you work within Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures. You monitor patients' reactions and vital signs during and after anesthesia and you take remedial action when needed. You submit a postoperative report on each patient's condition and keep records of the anesthetics you've given. You also perform procedures outside of the OR, following KP policies, your established competencies, and a physician's order.

What your day to day looks like

You do a lot more than just put people under. Before any surgical proceeding, delivery, or other medical procedure in the hospital, you conduct or review the anesthetic evaluation of each patient. You consult with anesthesiologists and surgeons. You review patient charts, including permits, pre operative medications, lab work, and any significant variations ; like hearing aids, dentures, contact lenses, or other prostheses ; in line with KP and departmental policies.

You evaluate patients to spot any obvious difficulties with airway control and other issues. You make sure all pre anesthesia evaluations are thoroughly documented per policy and standards. When needed, you explain tests, procedures, and disease processes to patients and their families. You explain the major anesthetic risks to patients when they ask, and you document that those risks were explained.

You develop the care plan for each of your assigned patients. You review the plan with the supervising physician and get their agreement before proceeding. Then you implement the plan: starting IV solutions, selecting and administering the anesthetic based on patient safety, surgical needs, possible post op complications, and the patient's history and condition. You evaluate and manage the patient throughout, in line with departmental policy.

When a patient is transferred from the surgery suite, you participate in a safety oriented handoff with the post anesthesia care unit staff. You monitor vital signs like blood pressure and watch for any significant physical changes. You keep the anesthesiologist and surgeon informed of the patient's condition and take any necessary remedial action ; including infant resuscitation when needed.

You mix solutions to required concentrations ; things like pentothal, succinylcholine, vaso active drugs, and others. You keep a current, accurate, and complete record of every procedure you perform and each patient's condition immediately before anesthesia, according to established standards. For procedures done outside the OR ; like intubation, arterial line placement, and the like ; you chart the details on progress notes, in accordance with policies, procedures, competencies, and physician orders.
