What you’ll actually be doing in this role
This is a job where you help customers get exactly what they need from the deli, meat, seafood, bakery, or grocery department. - Show a friendly attitude through eye contact and body language that says “I’m here to help”
- Respond to customer questions quickly and effectively
- Stock product and maintain displays based on Meijer’s merchandising guidelines
- Use store technology to complete your daily activities
- Follow safety and sanitation rules without cutting corners
- Your department could be Meat, Seafood, Bakery, Deli, or Grocery ; depends on where you're placed
The skills that actually matter for this job
You don't need a degree for this role. But you do need to bring a few specific things with you every day. Being organized helps a lot. So does being someone who listens carefully and communicates clearly ; whether you're face to face with a customer or handling something virtually.
- A willingness to learn new technology (we'll train you if it's new)
- Troubleshooting problems calmly when something doesn't go as planned
- A process driven mindset that follows procedures without needing reminders
- The ability to stay cool and collected when things get busy or loud at the store level
- A genuine desire to work with customers consistently throughout your shift
- Physical stuff: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting while handling product; standing for extended periods of time is part of the job too
The details that make this different from other retail gigs
Meijer isn't some faceless corporation. It started as a family business in 1934 with Hendrik and Gezina Meijer. That culture still runs through everything we do ; including how we treat our team members.
- Weekly pay. You get paid every week. No waiting around two weeks for your money.
- Scheduling flexibility. We work around what works for you when we can.
- Paid parental leave. When your family grows (whether by birth or adoption), we've got you covered.
- Paid education assistance. Want to take classes? We'll help pay for them.
