What This Special Education Teacher Role Is About

As a Special Education teacher, you'll develop and monitor accommodations for students with special needs. You'll advocate for them and believe that specialized instruction and related services actually increase academic achievement. You'll offer academic, emotional, and physical support while keeping high expectations firmly in place.
What You'll Actually Do
Instruction
- Modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum that emphasizes diversity
- Collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 plans and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that include appropriate accommodations and modifications
- Create an inclusive, safe space where students feel empowered to become self guided learners
Special Education Specific Work
- Partner with general education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze trends in student work samples and assessments, then respond accordingly
- Ensure compliance with IEPs at all times
- Gather academic growth data and write goals to prepare for annual IEP meetings
- Teach pull out, push in, small group, and one on one instruction
- Implement strategies that differentiate instruction for every learner in your classroom
School Culture
- Build real, positive relationships with students so they feel seen, loved, and heard
- Partner with families to make sure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs
- Engage in practice based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions
- Attend weekly school wide meetings to cultivate community, model core values, and encourage student achievement
- Work with your grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies

You're a self directed learner who actively solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes and achieve objectives.
What You Need
- A demonstrated interest in impacting K 12 students in urban schools and communities; 1 2 years experience is preferred
- Academic expertise in Special Education, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or a related field
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university before you start
- You don't need certification to be hired, but you must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements. If you don't have a degree in education, you'll need to enroll in a teacher preparation program and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher while working here. Uncommon requires teachers to become certified in New York within a reasonable period after starting
Compensation
Pay for this role runs between $50,000 and $64,700. Your starting pay depends on relevant full time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full time teaching experience will likely start at $50,000.
