Maintenance Technician

Marsden·Rochester, NY

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this Maintenance Technician role in Rochester, NY. It's a straight up, hands on job where you're the one keeping things running. You'll be based at one property in Midtown Manhattan, working a solid Monday to Friday schedule from 8am to 4:30pm.

What you'd be doing

The core of it is fixing things and stopping problems before they start. You're the go to person when something breaks or needs attention.

  • Tackle work orders from start to finish, aiming to wrap them up within 48 hours.
  • The repairs cover a lot of ground: HVAC issues, basic electrical and plumbing, carpentry, appliances, fixtures, and windows.
  • A big part of the job is preventative maintenance. You'll do inspections and follow the scheduled tasks to keep equipment from failing.
  • Getting apartments ready for new residents is on the list, too.
  • You'll coordinate with outside vendor teams on bigger projects and help keep your workshop stocked and organized with your peers.
  • There's an on call rotation for emergency maintenance that you'll be part of as scheduled.
  • If you've got experience, you might help show newer technicians the ropes.
  • And you'll need to keep any required certifications current through training.

The environment & what we need from you

This isn't a desk job. It's physically demanding most days. You should be ready for that.

  • You'll be kneeling, lifting, bending, pushing, and pulling regularly.
  • Lifting over 20 lbs is common; sometimes you'll handle items up to 80 lbs with assistance.
  • The work involves ladders, stairs, confined spaces, and being around equipment noise and fumes.
  • You'll deal with weather changes if you're moving between areas and handle tools with sharp edges.
  • Getting around the property quickly is key; that means stairs, hallways, and common areas all day long.

Your background & tools

We're looking for someone who already knows their way around a building's systems. Here are the specifics:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A 2 year Technical Degree or four years of experience in multi family or commercial building maintenance will work.
  • Computer skills need to be solid enough for emailing timecards online and using Microsoft Office programs like Excel for basic data entry.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are non negotiable.
  • Any level of boilers license is accepted; having one is a definite plus. Other trade certifications are preferred too.
  • You need to provide your own hand tools. The full list includes: Hammer; Phillips and Slotted Screwdrivers; Crescent Wrench; Channellock Pliers; Pipe Wrench; Allen Wrenches; Utility Knife; Flashlight; Hacksaw; Nut Drive Set; ¼” Socket Set; Star Bits Set; Wire Stripper; Torpedo Level; Inspection Mirror; Cordless Drill; Tape Measure; GFI Receptacle Tester; Handheld Infrared/Laser Thermometer; Basic Multimeter.

The practical stuff

Beyond the technical skills, how you operate matters just as much for fitting in here.

Clear communication; both writing and speaking; is essential. You have to manage your own time well, juggle multiple tasks, make good calls, solve problems independently, but also work smoothly with a team. Professionalism with everyone; residents, vendors, coworkers, the public; is an everyday expectation. The schedule requires flexibility: being on call, working some weekends as scheduled, and being available for overtime when it’s needed.
