About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this one. It's a part time gig, but it isn't casual. We need someone to build a speech and debate program from the ground up at Rochester Prep High School. This is for a rookie team. The work you do here directly gives these students an edge; not just for getting into college, but for sticking with it and finishing.
The Role
You're the coach. That means you own everything from tryouts to trophies.
- You'll find the right tournaments, handle registration, and line up judges.
- Your job is to motivate, teach, and prepare the students.
- And you keep the school's leaders in the loop on how things are going.
You'd report to the Enrichment Program Manager at the school.
The Schedule & Responsibilities
This is a part time commitment that follows the school year from August through June. Here’s how it breaks down.
- Plan on up to 6 hours of work each week.
- A chunk of that is direct coaching: an average of 6 hours weekly outside of school, prepping students for competition.
- During "Projects" periods, you meet with students twice a week; Tuesdays and Thursdays for an hour each day.
- You also need up to 2 hours per week for your own prep work for practices and competitions.
Competitions
The team needs to compete. You’ll be leading that charge across at least six weekend tournaments over six months.
- It starts with you researching and identifying the right events.
- You sign the team up, working with the Enrichment Program Manager.
- You coach at and travel with students to every single competition.
- At least one of these tournaments needs to be nationally recognized, like something through the National Speech & Debate Association, with a path to national level competition.
- The team also needs to attend at least two regional or local competitions first, as preparation.
Talking With Families
This takes real time after school. We make sure everyone's on board from the start.
- You and the Enrichment Manager will identify team members and get a signed parent permission form confirming their commitment.
- Together, you'll set up a family communication plan using the Remind app to send updates about practices, competitions, and any other club activities outside school hours.
A Quick Note If You Also Work Here
If you're already an employee at Uncommon Schools and take this on, you're responsible for managing any absences from your regular job due to team tournaments. That means preparing your work and communicating about it ahead of time.
