Registered Nurse

About This Role

Hey there. I've been recruiting for OR and surgical roles for over a decade, and I know this isn't your average nursing gig. This is a PRN First Assist position at Johnston Willis Hospital in Richmond, VA. It's for someone who lives and breathes the operating room, understands the flow, and can anticipate a surgeon's next move. If that's you, let's talk.

What You'll Be Doing

You're the right hand in the OR. Your main focus is assisting the surgeon directly during procedures, but your day involves the full spectrum of perioperative care.

  • You'll set up and maintain a sterile field from start to finish.
  • A big part of the job is planning; you need to know what equipment and supplies are needed for each specific patient and procedure.
  • Providing pre op and post op nursing care is just as important as your role during surgery.
  • You have to keep an eye on efficiency, delivering quality care while being mindful of costs.
  • The schedule requires flexibility. You'll take on call assignments and help cover staffing when needed.
  • Sometimes you'll pitch in elsewhere in Surgical Services to keep everything running smoothly.

What You Need to Bring

This isn't an entry level role. We need proven skills and specific certifications. Here’s the non negotiable list:

  • You must be a Registered Nurse.
  • A Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) certification is required.
  • You also need your Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) credential.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is mandatory, but you can obtain it within your first 30 days if you don't have it already.

The Details & The Good Stuff

This is a PRN position with Johnston Willis Hospital, which is part of HCA Healthcare. The schedule revolves around surgical needs, so flexibility for call and coverage is central to the role.

  • There are additional options for dental, vision, life, and disability insurance.
  • A 401(k) plan with a 100% match on 3% to 9% of your pay (the match depends on your years of service).
  • An Employee Stock Purchase Plan lets you buy HCA stock at a 10% discount.
  • Family support benefits include fertility and family building services through Progyny plus adoption assistance.
  • They offer education assistance for tuition, student loans, certifications, and even dependent scholarships.
  • The Time Away From Work Program bundles paid time off, paid family leave, and disability coverage.
  • There's also an Employee Health Assistance Fund for colleagues based on income.
