About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this NICU RN role at Johnston Willis Hospital in Richmond, VA. It's a PRN position, which means the schedule is built around your availability. They're asking for a minimum of two 12 hour day shifts per pay period to stay active.
What you'd be doing
You'd be working in their Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Your patients are critically ill newborns; they might be premature or dealing with serious conditions like infections, birth defects, or other life threatening illnesses that need constant monitoring and sometimes surgery.
Your day involves delivering patient centered nursing care. You'll administer standard medications, run tests, and keep a close eye on everything. That means regularly monitoring and recording vital signs, tracking feeding amounts, and using computerized systems to document the infant's condition and communicate it to the team.
You won't be doing it alone. You're part of a multidisciplinary group that includes other nurses, providers, maternal fetal medicine specialists, pediatric surgeons, IBCLC lactation consultants, and patient care staff.
And when it's time for discharge? That's on you too. You'll educate the infant's caregivers on what comes next and coordinate the discharge plan with everyone on the healthcare team.
A big part of this is how you interact with people. You've got to maintain cultural awareness whether you're with a patient, a visitor, or anyone else you work with.
