Graduate Nurse

Chippenham Hospital·Richmond, VA

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this role. It's for a nursing student who's ready to get some serious hands on time on the floor. You're not just observing; you're in the mix, working directly with the RNs and the clinical team to deliver care. This is a PRN position, so the schedule is as needed, giving you flexibility around your classes.

What you'll be doing

You'll report to a Registered Nurse. Your main job is to support the nursing staff with patient care, focusing on quality and keeping things centered on the patient. That means a mix of direct and indirect tasks.

  • Work with the clinical team to put care plans into action.
  • Gather and document patient information when they arrive and throughout their stay.
  • Helping patients move is a big part of it. Turning, repositioning, helping them walk, and transporting them to other parts of the hospital.
  • A key piece is explaining medical info in plain language. You'll help patients and their families understand conditions, treatments, medications (including side effects), and what needs to happen next.
  • You'll also provide education on things like diet, exercise, or lifestyle changes needed after discharge to help patients manage their own health.

What you need to bring

The must haves are pretty straightforward. You have to be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing school and in good standing there. Once you've shown you're competent, you can take on higher level procedures. You also need a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

It'd be great if you've finished at least one year of nursing school, but it's not a dealbreaker. We're also looking for someone who's proactive about their own growth; you should be able to draft a personal career development plan and be open to reviewing it regularly with your supervisor or preceptor.
