About This Role
What you'll actually do in this classroom
You're the person who plans and delivers the daily learning experience for a group of students in Raleigh, NC. That means you design lessons that fit the curriculum and push kids to think critically and creatively. You'll pick instructional materials that reflect different cultures, learning styles, special needs, and economic backgrounds. You'll use both traditional and alternative assessments to know where each student stands, and you'll adjust your teaching based on what the data tells you.
Classroom management is on you too ; but it's not about being strict. It's about creating a space where students feel safe, engaged, and motivated. You'll support their intellectual growth, but also their personal and social development. You'll keep an orderly environment, watch out for safety at all times, and make sure equipment and materials are used properly.
Communication matters. You'll talk with students, parents, colleagues, and the community. You'll collaborate with them to improve what happens in your classroom. And you'll keep learning yourself ; professional development isn't optional; it's part of the job. You'll also handle the typical paperwork: maintaining records, following procedures, and staying on top of required practices.
The specific skills you need to bring
You need a solid grasp of curriculum and how to integrate it. You should know your subject area well and understand effective classroom instruction. Beyond that, here's what you'll rely on daily:
- You know how to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Apps.
- Your time management and organizational skills are sharp.
- You can solve problems strategically and use multiple data points to make decisions.
- You can prepare course objectives and outlines that follow state and school guidelines.
- You can teach in a way that reflects multiple perspectives and is genuinely multicultural.
- You infuse technology into your lessons naturally, not as an afterthought.
- You constantly monitor student safety, especially during inclusive activities.
- You know how to motivate and inspire kids, not just deliver content.
- You keep your classroom clean, orderly, and conducive to learning.
- You maintain order and discipline without making it personal.
- You keep accurate files and records.
- You work well with administrators, central office staff, other teachers, students, parents, and community members.
- You communicate clearly ; both in writing and out loud.
Education requirements and what they prefer
You need a bachelor's degree in Education with the appropriate subject area. You also need to hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator's License in a teaching content area. That's non negotiable.
They'd prefer you have a master's degree in a specific subject area. So if you've got one, it works in your favor.
