Security Officer

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this gig. It's for the US Open tennis tournament in Queens, NY. This is seasonal work, just for the event's run at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center. You'd be on the security and event staff team with BEST Crowd Management.

What you'd do

You're the person making sure things run smoothly and safely. It's a mix of hands on setup, watching the crowd, and helping people out.

  • Help get the event ready: setting up equipment, putting out signs, whatever needs doing.
  • Work the entry points. You'll check people coming in and make sure no one gets in who shouldn't.
  • Answer questions. Give directions. Be a helpful, friendly face for attendees who are lost or just looking for info.
  • Work with the rest of the team to keep everything organized and under control.
  • Manage the flow of people at doors and exits.
  • If something happens; a security issue or an emergency; you need to respond quickly and follow the procedures we have in place.
  • Keep an eye on your area to make sure event rules and safety steps are being followed.
  • Sometimes folks get upset. You'd handle complaints or minor conflicts calmly and professionally.

The basics you need

A few non negotiables here. Check these off first.

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required. Some college is a nice plus, but not a must have.
  • You absolutely need a valid New York Guard Card or New York State Security License to even be considered.
  • The pay is $18.00 per hour for this part time, seasonal role.

The kind of person we need

The specifics matter, but so does how you handle yourself. Here’s what works well for this job.

  • Past experience in event security, law enforcement, or something similar is really helpful. If you've got it, great. If not, we can talk.
  • You're on your feet most of the time. Good physical fitness and stamina are important because you'll be standing and walking for long stretches during events.
  • You notice things other people miss and can think on your feet when a problem pops up.
  • Talking to people; all kinds of people; is a big part of this. You need to be clear, professional, and easy to work with.
  • The schedule isn't 9 to 5. Events happen when they happen, so you must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for the tournament schedule.
