About This Role
Job Overview
This is an opening for an Operating Room Registered Nurse. You'd be working in a surgical setting, providing direct patient care before, during, and after procedures. The work is procedural and precise, with a focus on maintaining sterile fields and anticipating the needs of the surgical team. This position is based in Queens, NY.
Duties & Responsibilities
Your day revolves around the OR schedule. It's a mix of preparation, active procedure support, and patient transition.
- Complete preoperative assessments and patient education.
- Instrument and supply setup for scheduled cases.
- The core of the job: circulating or scrubbing in for surgeries.
- You're responsible for maintaining that strict aseptic technique everyone relies on.
- Accurate documentation of intraoperative care and counts.
- Assisting with safe patient transfer to PACU or other units post op.
Requirements
A few things are non negotiable here. We have to list them clearly.
- A current, unrestricted RN license for the state where Queens, NY is located.
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association; ACLS is often needed too.
- Specific OR nursing experience. This isn't a general med surg role; you need to know the flow of an operating room.
- CNOR certification is a huge plus, honestly. It shows dedicated expertise.
- The physical part is real: you're on your feet for long periods, and you need to be able to help with positioning patients and moving equipment.
What It's Like In This Role
The environment is highly structured but can change in a heartbeat if an emergency case comes in. You're part of a close knit team; surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical techs; where communication has to be instant and clear. There's little room for ambiguity. You'll likely use an electronic health record system for charting and some kind of scheduling software. The workload is based on the OR board; some days end on time, others run long when cases are complex. You learn to expect both.
Why You'll Like This Opportunity
Surgical nursing isn't for everyone, but if it's your specialty, this kind of role offers things you value. There's a clear sense of accomplishment at the end of each case. The schedule, while demanding, is usually predictable based on assigned shifts (no wondering if you'll get pulled to another floor). And because JobXi lists openings from various hospitals and surgical centers in Queens, NY, you get to see what different employers offer; it can be a good way to find a culture that fits your pace.
Schedule & Work Type
This is typically a full time position working onsite at a hospital or ambulatory surgery center. Shifts vary: think early mornings for first starts, evenings, or even weekend call rotations depending on the facility's needs. Part time or per diem roles pop up sometimes too.
