About This Role

This job is about keeping the building running. Not just any building, but one that matters.

The American Red Cross in Portland, OR needs a Building Engineer. That’s the official title. If you've worked as an industrial maintenance technician or a facilities engineer in a highly regulated space, you know what this is. You're the person who walks in and knows the building's heartbeat. You keep the systems that keep the mission going ; lights, air, power, safety ; all running right.

You will not be sitting at a desk all day. This is fully onsite at our Portland Chapter office. You will travel about 20% of the time. And no, there is no relocation assistance for this role.

What you will actually do

  • Act as the onsite subject matter expert on building engineering. You’re the person people come to when something breaks or needs fixing.
  • Advise on planning for building systems, electricity, equipment repair, building design, and general building maintenance.
  • Perform a variety of service work in specialized building systems ; mechanical, electrical and electronic, hydraulics, carpentry, or machine servicing.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems with operations and maintenance issues as they come up. And they will come up.
  • Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on all HVAC equipment and other related machinery. That means keeping things running before they break, and fixing them when they do.
  • Make sure all regulatory operations meet minimum compliance standards. This is a regulated environment; it matters.
  • Maintain both the ongoing regulated training to perform your assigned regulatory tasks and the relevant role specific training, to stay in compliance.
  • Enforce organization safety policies, regulations, and procedures related to facilities management. You set the standard.
  • Perform facility safety and fire extinguisher inspections, schedule fire drills, and maintain safety documentation. You also oversee the emergency generator and create and issue security access cards.
  • Monitor the security surveillance system and equipment as needed.
  • Oversee and maintain the facility maintenance work order system. That includes coordinating and submitting work orders on time and providing maintenance dispatch for emergency requests.
  • Handle administrative support ; coordinating preventive maintenance schedules, ordering department supplies, recording and logging maintenance, and submitting work orders.
  • Keep accurate operational logs of equipment in the building.
  • You may also receive regulated supplies, oversee bio waste pick ups, and handle destruction manifests.

What you need to have to get this job

  • A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent trade school certificate. That’s required.
  • A current Universal Refrigerant license. Required.
  • OSHA 10 certification. Required.
  • HVAC certification. Required.
  • ASHE membership (American Society for Healthcare Employees) or the ability to get and keep it. Preferred, not required.

  • You need to be competent in both electrical and plumbing areas of knowledge.
  • A basic working knowledge of emergency power generators.
  • The ability to assess the building envelope ; roof, structure, that kind of thing.
  • You should be familiar with NFPA fire codes, building codes, and the NEC (National Electrical Code).
  • You have to be able to operate independently, with initiative, supporting your area with minimal supervision.
