About This Role
Hey, it's me again. I've been recruiting for retail management roles for over a decade, and I can tell you which ones are just a job and which ones are a genuine opportunity. This one at Journeys in Pittsburgh, PA is the latter. It's not about babysitting a store; it's about leading the team that defines the place.
The Role
You're the right hand to the Store Manager. When they're not there, you're in charge. Your main focus is building and coaching a sales team that hits its goals and embodies what this brand is all about.
- Hit your personal sales targets and help the store crush its goals.
- Jump into finding and hiring great people who fit the vibe.
- Train new hires and develop your team; your success depends on theirs.
- Give real feedback, enforce policies, and hold people accountable. That's how you build a strong team.
- Spot talent on your crew and get them ready to move up in the company.
- Run the whole show when the Store Manager or Manager in Training is out: operations, staff, everything.
- You're responsible for loss prevention practices in their absence, too.
- Keep your Store Manager looped in on everything the store needs.
- Handle customer issues calmly and effectively.
- The core of it all: make sure every customer has a fun, full service experience.
- A couple practical bits: you'll handle bank deposits and need to live out the Journeys culture yourself so your team sees it every day.
What You Need to Bring
This isn't an entry level gig. They need someone who gets retail and is ready to step up into leadership. Here’s what that looks like:
- A solid 6 to 12 months of retail sales experience is required.
- Prior retail management experience? That’s a big plus, but not an absolute deal breaker if you have the other stuff down.
- You genuinely like people; both customers and your future team members. Excellent interpersonal skills aren't just a line on a resume here; they're how you succeed.
- A real desire to win in a busy retail setting. It's energetic, sometimes chaotic, but never boring.
- A willingness to learn everything. You'll need to complete all training programs leading up to the Co Manager position (or have equivalent training).
- The schedule: plan on about 45 hours per week. That includes nights and weekend shifts; that's just part of retail life.
- The physical side: you'll be on your feet for long periods, climbing ladders, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds when needed.
- You must be at least 18 years old. Age requirements for full time employment can vary by state though; we can clarify that during our chat if needed.
The Good Stuff
Journeys puts its money where its mouth is when they talk about rewarding success. They promote from within; fast; if you're performing. You're joining what they call "a family with an Attitude That Cares." The environment is legitimately fun, with people who are passionate about the culture. The compensation package has multiple parts: base pay plus sales commission and bonus potential. And yes, there are benefits. Now for some important fine print: The exact pay rate, commission structure, and bonus setup vary by job title and location (county/city/state/province). Benefits offered may include medical/dental/vision insurance packages along with vacation time; community service hours are also part of their ethos. But because these specifics change based on where you are (state/province/territory), please refer directly to www.benefitsatgenesco.com for official details relevant to Pittsburgh, PA.
