About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this OR RN position at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ. I've been placing nurses here for a long time, and it's a serious, high acuity environment. They're looking for someone who knows their stuff and can handle the pace of a major academic medical center.
What You'd Be Doing
You're coordinating nursing care from start to finish. That means direct patient care, sure, but also educating patients and families and managing transitions. You'll be planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating everything for your assigned patients.
The role has leadership baked into it. You might act as a preceptor or take on informal leadership roles. Part of the job is delegating patient care appropriately; you have to consider skill levels, patient needs, and available resources.
Mentoring and teaching are big parts of the culture here. And you should be ready to jump into committee work or special projects.
- A heads up: some folks in these roles need to drive their personal vehicle as part of the job.
- This role qualifies for TN visa sponsorship if that applies to you.
The Schedule & Logistics
This is a full time gig working 80 hours per pay period.
- The shift is days: 0645 to 1715.
- You'll work four 10 hour shifts each week; your specific day off will be set when you're hired.
- Weeknight, weekend, and holiday call is required. You need to be able to respond within 30 minutes when you're on call.
- If you live outside that 30 minute response window, call rooms are available through security so you can stay on site when needed.
What You Need to Bring
The education requirement is specific. You must be a graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA.
If your program wasn't accredited by one of those bodies, you need at least one year of RN experience in an applicable setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic itself.
A couple more notes on degrees:
- If you started as an RN on or after April 1, 2020 with an associate degree, you have five years from your start date to complete your BSN from an accredited program.
- If your RN start date was before April 1, 2020 with an associate degree, the BSN requirement in place at your time of hire applies.

>You must have excellent communication skills; both talking and writing.
Experience working on a team isn't just nice; it's expected.
Computer skills are required. If you've used an electronic medical record system before? That's preferred.
Your hours won't always be predictable. The job requires flexibility for days, evenings, nights,
holidays,
and weekends.
You have to adapt quickly; situations change fast here.
They're looking for demonstrated leadership,
critical thinking skills,
and yes,
being an effective communicator again because it's that important.
A current RN license for the applicable state is mandatory.
For Arizona specifically:
you need to maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
(Note:
Positions not physically on campus might not require current BLS;
that's determined by the specific work area.)
Any additional state licenses or specialty certifications required by the work area are on you to get and keep.
Now,
for what would really make someone stand out:
One year of Cardiothoracic operating room experience is preferred.
And if you've previously completed something like AORN Periop101?
That's also preferred.
Let me tell you about how they pay nurses here.
It’s not just about years on the clock.
Mayo Clinic uses its own compensation model that factors in your experience,
your education,
and your dedication to the organization.
When they combine that with their tuition reimbursement program?
It’s built so nurses can grow professionally while maximizing what they earn.
The benefits package is comprehensive.
Medical plans come with multiple options so you can find what fits.
Dental coverage is through Delta Dental,
or there’s a reimbursement account for more flexible coverage.
The vision plan is affordable with access to a national network.
For saving money pre tax,
they offer HSAs and FSAs for eligible expenses.
And they want people thinking long term;
the retirement package is designed to help secure your future.
