About This Role
Alright, let's talk about this job. I'm looking for a Cardiovascular ICU RN to join the team at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ. This isn't just another nursing gig; it's on their 3 West unit, which is a high acuity cardiovascular and thoracic progressive care floor. They're moving into a brand new space with 46 beds soon.
The Work You'll Do
You're coordinating all phases of nursing care. That means direct patient care, sure, but also patient and family education, and managing transitions as patients move through the system. You'll be planning, implementing, and evaluating care based on Mayo's Nursing Professional Practice Model.
Leadership is part of the deal here. You might act as a preceptor for others, take on informal or formal leadership roles, and get involved in quality improvement projects. You'll delegate tasks appropriately based on skill levels and what the patient needs.
The patient population is specific and complex. You'll be caring for people with congestive heart failure, recovering from CV or thoracic surgery, post heart transplant, and those with pulmonary hypertension. You'll manage devices like Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) and pulmonary artery catheters, run ultrafiltration, handle post cardiac procedures, titrate medications, and work with arterial lines.
A quick note: some folks in this role might need to drive their personal vehicle as part of their job duties.
What We Need From You
- You need to be a graduate from a baccalaureate nursing program accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA.
- If your program wasn't accredited by one of those bodies, you must have at least one year of RN experience in an applicable setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic itself.
- For associate degree RNs starting after April 1, 2020: you must complete your BSN within five years of your start date.
- For associate degree RNs who started before that date: you must meet the BSN requirement that was in place when you were hired.
- A current RN license for the state is required.
- In Arizona specifically, you need to maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) competency. Some off campus positions might not require current BLS; that's determined by the specific work area.
- You should be comfortable working flexible hours. Your schedule could include days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and being on call.
- The ability to adapt to unpredictable situations in a clinical setting is non negotiable.
The Unit & The Culture
This team prides itself on being a strong multidisciplinary group that values nursing input. It's a place where you can advocate for your patients every day. They talk about having a culture built on respect and trust; compassion and integrity are how they treat patients, families; and each other.
The unit is staffed based on patient acuity (not just ratios), and there are tons of resources available around the clock to support you. They emphasize that this is where you can expand your knowledge and work at the top of your professional scope.
