Service Technician

CoolSys·Philadelphia, PA

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this Service Technician spot we're trying to fill in Philadelphia, PA. I've been doing this long enough to know a real technical role when I see one. This isn't just changing filters; you're going to be the expert on some serious equipment.

What You'll Be Working On

The core of this job is hands on work with complex power generation and HVAC systems. You're not just fixing things; you're understanding them inside and out.

  • You’ll travel regularly to customer sites for preventive maintenance, unscheduled repairs, and troubleshooting.
  • The equipment list is specific: natural gas and biogas engines, generator sets, CHP (Combined Heat and Power) systems, and all the related Balance of Plant gear. That means HRSGs, radiators, steam/hydronic boilers, absorption chillers, standby generators, automatic transfer switches, switchgear… the whole package.
  • A big part of the day to day involves mechanical and electrical repair on that equipment. Think engine overhauls, testing, calibration, and commissioning.
  • You'll also monitor system performance remotely through online controls to diagnose issues; whether they're technical malfunctions or operator errors; and provide solutions.
  • There's a technical support side to it. You'll interface with system operators and other field techs to provide guidance.
  • Clear communication is non negotiable. You need to write detailed daily reports on all work performed for both internal use and the customer. Spotting potential future problems and reporting them quickly is part of that.
  • Keeping project and service records organized is on you. Good record keeping matters here.
  • And look, we all have to keep learning. Taking part in educational sessions and product training to stay sharp is expected.

The Skills & Experience You Need

This isn't an entry level gig. We need someone who already knows their way around an engine bay and a control panel.

  • A strong background in reciprocating engines and electrical systems is mandatory. You need a high level of skill with internal combustion engines and generator sets.
  • Experience with natural gas engines is ideal. But we will seriously consider folks with deep experience in diesel standby engines or other technologies like compression engines.
  • Here’s something interesting: we’re also open to technicians who come from other complex technology fields like aircraft engines or turbines if they have an excellent track record there.
  • You must be able to independently complete the technical start up for gas engines and CHP power systems.
  • The ability to independently diagnose and repair these power systems is key.
  • A basic working knowledge of advanced controls, safety shutdown systems, circuit breakers, and control panel wiring is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required; you've got to be able to get yourself around for site visits.
  • Some experience with IP Networking for troubleshooting would be a huge plus here too given how connected these systems are now.

The Practical Stuff & How You Work

The schedule isn't always 9 to 5 when equipment goes down. Here's what that looks like day to day:
