Wound Care RN

Carle Health·Peoria, IL

About This Role

Alright, let's talk about this Wound Care RN position in Peoria, IL. It's a specialized role where you're the go to person for wound, ostomy, and skin care management. You'll be based in the Wound Center but your expertise gets shared across the hospital, consulting on acute care units to make sure patients get consistent, high quality care from admission through discharge.

What you'll do

Your main focus is managing patient care from start to finish. That means doing the initial assessment, mapping out the treatment course, and coordinating with other services. A big part of the job is communication; you're talking with physicians to clarify orders and making sure everyone involved in a patient's care; like Home Health or DME companies; understands the wound, ostomy, or skin plan.

  • Perform thorough patient assessments to figure out their status, knowledge level, and what they need to learn.
  • You'll deliver all nursing care and patient education, adjusting your approach based on age specific needs, cultural considerations, and how well someone learns.
  • Documentation is key. You're responsible for recording a patient's response to interventions, all education provided, and any changes in their condition.
  • The role includes performing bedside lab tests and collecting specimens according to provider orders and hospital policy.
  • You’ll help evaluate new ostomy and wound care products.
  • A big part of success here is collaboration. You’re working closely with staff nurses and sometimes educating other departmental personnel when asked.
  • Staying current is non negotiable. You need to keep up with skin care trends, standards for wounds and ostomies, new equipment, pharmacology updates; you name it. Reading current literature is part of the job.
  • You’ll also participate in activities that meet regulatory standards from bodies like The Joint Commission or Medicare.

What you need to have

The non negotiables are pretty clear cut. You must have an Associate's Degree in Nursing and be licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in Illinois through IDFPR. Getting your Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association within your first 30 days is also required.
