
About This Role
What you'll do
This is a nursing role where you bring your clinical knowledge and skills to an interdisciplinary team. You'll manage patient care using the nursing process, from assessment through evaluation.
- Assess each patient's status through interviews, observation, and physical exams to identify real problems and expected outcomes
- Build an individualized plan of care ; you'll collaborate with the patient, their family, and the healthcare team to get it right
- Use the interventions laid out in that plan to reach the expected patient outcomes
- Ongoing evaluation of patient progress toward goals, and you'll document that progress throughout the shift
- Modify the plan of care based on your evaluation and any changes in the patient's condition
- Complete all required documentation, including patient charts and event reports
- Show technical knowledge of equipment and troubleshoot issues when they come up
- Share clinical knowledge informally with others when learning opportunities arise
- Perform patient bedside lab testing and the associated quality control, following medical orders and hospital lab policies
- Coordinate interdisciplinary care by collaborating with team members and pulling in additional resources when needed
- Analyze clinical situations systematically ; act to get resources or fix problems so you meet or exceed expected outcomes and patient needs
- Recognize when you need help and use resources, including physician and nurse to nurse consultation, in a timely way
- Prioritize work consistently based on changes in patient condition, changes in assignment, and unexpected interruptions
- Identify and use team resources to solve problems or address needs
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to organize tasks and activities for each patient's care from admission to discharge, following the plan of care and aiming for identified outcomes
- Provide goal focused shift reports
- Advocate with physicians on the patient's behalf when necessary
- Use communication and teamwork strategies that promote high team performance and achieve optimal patient outcomes and unit productivity
- Assess and choose teaching strategies that fit the patient's and family's age specific needs
- Adapt your teaching based on the patient's response, readiness to learn, and level of comprehension
- Ensure patient safety in the hospital by following policies and procedures and adhering to National Patient Safety Goals
- Consult appropriate hospital resources to provide specialized education
- Use the SVI patient education system as a resource for patients and families
- Participate actively in data collection, analysis, and problem solving ; give input on process improvements and patient satisfaction
- Make sure care is consistent with standards of care, evidence based practices, national patient safety goals, core measures, and other quality initiatives
- Work with the interdisciplinary team to identify opportunities for improvement in patient care and patient/family satisfaction
- Participate in implementing Performance Improvement initiatives
- Follow up on patient and family requests and needs promptly and efficiently ; anticipate what they'll need
- Serve on unit based councils
What you'll need

- College Diploma in Nursing or a Nursing Diploma
- Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) ; you'll need this within 30 days of starting
