Patient Access Specialist

Huntington Hospital·Pasadena, CA

About This Role

What you'll actually do as a Patient Flow Coordinator

This role is the nerve center for patient flow on the DOU (Direct Observation Unit). You're not just moving patients through beds; you're coordinating the whole rhythm of the unit, making sure everything runs smooth and safe. Think of it like air traffic control, but with stethoscopes.

  • You manage patient flow operatives to keep the department efficient and running well. That means directing daily functions, interpreting policies and procedures, and making sure everyone follows standards from JCAHO and other regulatory agencies.
  • You serve as a resource and role model for Huntington Hospital's Customer Service Standards. Your team will look to you for how things are done right.
  • You support the Department Manager with new hire orientation, staff development, updating patient care plans, and communicating with nurses during shift changes. Basically, you bridge the clinical and administrative worlds.
  • When needed ; because this is healthcare ; you step in and perform duties in any nursing capacity required. You've got to be ready for anything.
  • Flexibility with hours is part of this job. Days are 12 hour shifts, but schedules can shift based on what the unit needs.

Education that's non negotiable

A Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) is required. If you have an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), we'll consider that only if you're already enrolled in a BSN program with proof of completion within two years of your hire date or transfer date to an RN position.

You need to provide a diploma or transcripts showing your highest degree earned.

Experience that matters here

A minimum of two years current experience in your area of expertise or equivalent service area is required. This isn't theoretical ; we need people who have done this work recently.

  • Completion of an approved Critical Care Core Curriculum program is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Leadership experience? Strongly preferred. We want someone who's led before, even informally.
  • Within 21 days of hire, you must challenge and successfully pass the Basic Dysrhythmia course curriculum. No exceptions on this one.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with computerized documentation systems are required. You'll live in those systems every day.

Licenses & certifications ; bring them or get them fast

Required:

  • A current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)
  • A current Basic Life Support Provider (BLS) card from American Heart Association
  • A current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider (ACLS) card from American Heart Association

Preferred:

  • A current Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification or related specialty certification ; it sets you apart.

The skills that make someone thrive here

Caring for patients on pulmonary monitoring or support including ventilators. Managing vasoactive drip medications like they're second nature. Handling thoracic patients including chest tube management. Taking care of post operative stable open heart patients including transthoracic epicardial pacing. IV admixture competency ; no fumbling allowed.

The environment changes fast here ; every hour can be different from the last one ; so being able to pivot quickly without losing focus is critical.
