About This Role

The Role

MasTec Civil is hiring an Assistant Construction Project Manager for a new highway improvement project in Orlando, FL. This isn't a desk job where you just shuffle paper. You'll be the person making sure the construction is done right ; according to the specs, on schedule, and under budget. It's a lot of responsibility, but you'll have the support of a management team that's been doing this for decades.

The project itself is a major highway improvement. You'll oversee everything from planning to closeout, and you'll be the company's top representative on site. That means attending meetings with the Owner and Engineer, coordinating with Superintendents and Foremen, and making sure every document gets submitted on time.

Founded in 1987, MasTec Civil (formerly Condotte America) is a heavy highway contractor that builds complex transportation projects ; roadways, bridges, interchanges, mass transit, and tolling facilities. Our Clean Energy and Infrastructure Group is a $4 billion annual revenue business unit. In short, we build the roads and bridges that connect communities.

What You'll Actually Do

Planning and Scheduling. This starts before the first shovel hits the ground. You'll study the project thoroughly, then discuss your plans, schedules, and issues with your management team. You need to assess your full needs ; personnel, equipment, materials ; and figure out a realistic time frame. Then you keep planning as the project evolves, always looking for improvements. Specific planning tasks include:

  • Setting up the field office site plan and trailers
  • Handling permits and fees
  • Establishing utilities and employee parking
  • Planning temporary roads and lay down areas
  • Setting up tool cribs
  • Managing insurance and bonds
  • Coordinating safety and first aid

Project Coordination. You're the top representative at the project. So you'll attend every progress meeting with the Owner and Engineer, and ensure all required documents get submitted on time. You'll also run internal scheduling meetings with Superintendents, Foremen, and Subcontractors regularly ; coordinating work areas, labor, equipment, materials, and survey needs. Before significant work items (asphalt, concrete deck placements, girder erection, traffic shifts, etc.), you'll hold Pre Activity Meetings to discuss responsibilities, means and methods, MOT requirements, safety, and quality control.

Personnel Selection. The Main Office and HR will help you pick key management team members. But hiring everyone else at the project level? That's on you. You'll coordinate staffing needs with HR. As head of the field office, you enforce company policies. You'll supervise the Project Engineer and other engineering staff, and coordinate with the Project Engineer to hire outside Specialty Engineers for work that needs highly technical analysis. And you'll mentor the young engineers assigned to the project.

Contract Documents. You need to know your contract, specifications, plans, addendums, revisions, special provisions, permits, and utility relocation schedules inside and out. Understand what's required for each work item and how you get paid for it. If something entitles you to extra pay or warrants documentation for a possible claim, you need to catch it. You'll review and approve all invoices, subcontractor payments, and timesheets before they go to the Main Office. And study every cost report in detail ; noting any variances from estimates.

Cost Control. The project's budget is yours. You'll discuss variances with the Estimator. You need to understand the pay item estimate worksheets and communicate that information to supervisors. Evaluate the cost effectiveness of your procedures, and replace anything that isn't working. Take every measure to avoid unplanned occurrences that could increase costs ; things like claims, disputes, or rework. And keep the Owner informed of progress weekly.

What You Need to Bring

  • Experience in heavy highway construction or civil infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of construction specifications, plans, and contract documents
  • Ability to manage budgets, cost reports, and pay item estimates
  • Experience coordinating with Owners, Engineers, Subcontractors, and field crews
  • Leadership skills ; you'll be supervising engineers and mentoring younger staff
  • A track record of enforcing company policies and safety procedures
  • Ability to handle planning, scheduling, and resource allocation
  • Experience with invoice and timesheet approvals
  • Understanding of change orders and documentation for claims

What You'll Get

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off
  • Holiday pay
  • Life insurance and disability coverage
  • Employee assistance program
  • Opportunities for career growth within a $4 billion business unit
  • The chance to work on major infrastructure that connects communities
