The Job
Mercy needs an Inpatient Coding Specialist in Oklahoma City, OK. You'll review and analyze medical records for inpatient, outpatient, and professional services, then assign the correct diagnoses and procedure codes based on what the physician documented. This isn't just data entry ; you're expected to follow the Standards of Ethical Coding from AHIMA and stick to official coding guidelines.
What You'll Actually Do
- Review documentation in the medical record and assign ICD 10 CM and CPT/HCPCS codes.
- Work with both inpatient and outpatient records ; sometimes professional services too.
- Use the 3M encoder and Epic system (preferred, but not required).
- Spend roughly 75% of your time on mouse use and 25% on keyboard work for data entry.
- Make sure every code matches what the physician documented and follows compliance rules.
What You Need to Bring
You need a high school diploma to start. But more important is your experience ; prior coding work with ICD 10 CM, HCPCS, and CPT in an acute care inpatient, outpatient hospital, or professional services setting. You should also have a working knowledge of ICD 10 CM and CPT/HCPCS classification systems in a hospital setting.
Certification is required, but here's the thing: you can get it within 6 months of starting. Mercy accepts RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CPC, or CIRCC. If you don't have one yet, you'll need to complete it soon after hire.
Preferred Stuff (Not Required, But Helpful)
- An Associate's from an accredited Health Information Technology program or a Bachelor's from an accredited Health Information Management program.
- Experience with 3M encoder and the Epic system.
