Oral Surgeon

Norfolk, VA

About This Role

Job Overview

This Oral Surgeon role places you in Norfolk, VA with a practice that handles everything from routine extractions to complex reconstructive cases. You're the person patients depend on when their dental issues go beyond what a general dentist can manage. The work is precise, high stakes, and deeply rewarding; you solve problems that others can't. Most days combine scheduled surgeries with some emergency walk ins, so adaptability matters as much as technical skill.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform surgical extractions, including impacted wisdom teeth and broken molars, under local or general anesthesia.
  • Diagnose oral pathologies using X rays and 3D imaging; then draft a treatment plan the patient can actually follow.
  • Repair facial trauma; lacerations, fractures, and tissue damage; in coordination with emergency departments.
  • Place dental implants and manage bone grafting procedures to rebuild jaw structure.
  • Handle biopsies for suspicious lesions in the mouth or jaw; you'll be the one calling the pathologist afterward.
  • Counsel patients on post op care, pain management, and recovery timelines without sugarcoating it.

Requirements

A DDS or DMD degree from an accredited dental program is mandatory. So is completion of an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency; no exceptions there. You need board certification (or eligibility) from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. State licensure in Norfolk, VA must be current before you start scrubbing in. Hands on experience with intravenous sedation protocols is expected; we don't have time to train this from scratch. Mental stamina counts too; some cases run over four hours standing still under bright lights.

What It's Like in This Role

The schedule leans heavily full time but rarely feels monotonous. One morning you're pulling a stubborn third molar; by afternoon you might be rebuilding a patient's lower jaw after an accident. You'll work alongside a lead surgeon who backs your decisions but expects clear rationale behind every cut or suture. Equipment includes digital radiography units and a well stocked sterile suite; everything within arm's reach if organized properly. Sterile technique isn't optional here; it's baked into every glove change and tray pass.

Why You'll Like This Opportunity

Surgical volume stays consistently high in Norfolk, VA, which means your skills get constant use instead of atrophy between big cases. Practices hiring through JobXi often offer flexible scheduling blocks; some let you compress work into three longer days per week so you have real recovery time afterwards. You get exposure to different case types across multiple employer settings too: private clinics, hospital partnerships, even mobile surgery units depending on what fits your preferences at any given point in your career.

Schedule & Work Type

Temporary placements run twelve weeks minimum at most employers listing here; permanent positions fill slower but usually start within sixty days after credentialing clears overnight shifts aren't typical unless tied directly to trauma call coverage during weekends only.
