Therapist

VNS Health·New York, NY

About This Role

What You'll Do

You'll provide physical therapy interventions to designated patients, working under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist (PT). This is a hands on role where you'll follow an established plan of care ; including treatments and patient or caregiver education. You can modify specific treatment procedures, but only within the PT's plan and your scope of practice as a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA).

Documentation is part of the deal. You'll record all care provided and keep those records up to VNS Health's standards. You'll also help monitor patient progress by observing and reporting back to the supervising PT, as outlined in VNS Health policy.

  • Comply with PTA scope of practice. That means a co visit with the PT on every initial PTA visit, and keeping the PT in the loop. The PT re assesses each patient every 6 visits or 30 days ; whichever comes first.
  • Manage your assigned caseload. You'll deliver physical therapy services as directed by the PT's plan of care.
  • Attend meetings: interdisciplinary team meetings, in services and training, rehab services meetings, and caseload reviews.
  • Travel to patients' homes and other facilities. That could be elevated buildings, walk ups, care facilities, single or multiple family homes ; and yes, places with pets. You'll use approved transportation to get there.
  • Assist patients with therapeutic interventions and activities of daily living. This might mean positioning, moving, transferring, and lifting patients of all sizes and physical conditions ; sometimes with assistance, sometimes without. You'll also instruct and verify family members or paraprofessionals on these tasks. Expect to use and help patients use durable medical equipment like wheelchairs, transfer lifts, ambulatory devices, slings, splints, orthoses, prostheses, and exercise/strengthening equipment.
  • Deliver care according to agency policies and professional standards. That can involve standing, stooping, sitting, crouching, twisting, reaching, bending, and stretching.
  • Transport and use required tech: a tablet, infection control materials, and supplies. These go in a VNS Health backpack weighing about 15 to 20 lbs. You'll carry it to and from patient homes, care facilities, VNS Health offices, and your own home.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

What You Need

Education wise, you need an Associate's Degree as a Physical Therapist Assistant from a New York State approved program ; or if your educational credentials are from elsewhere, they've got to be approved as equivalent by New York State.

Experience matters here. You need at least two years of clinical patient care experience, per NY State Education Law.

Bilingual skills might be required depending on operational needs. Basic PC skills are preferred.
