The Overview

This is a Director of Engineering & Security role at M Social Times Square Hotel in New York, NY. You'd be working with Highgate Hotels, a company that manages over 400 properties across North America, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America. They have about $15 billion in assets under management and have been in the game for 30 years. This isn't a small operation ; it's a real estate and hospitality management company that works with big ownership groups and major hotel brands.

What You'd Be Doing

You're responsible for the safe and profitable operation of the hotel's engineering and security side. That means everything from supervising staff to managing budgets to making sure emergency systems actually work when they need to.

  • Supervise and train all Engineering & Security staff on Customer Service, Standard Operating Procedures, Loss Prevention Standards, and Empowerment ; however that shakes out in your hotel.
  • Create, approve, and post staff schedules following Highgate Hotel standards.
  • Build and stick to an annual department budget. You'll also develop financial forecasts and attend monthly profit/loss review meetings.
  • Develop plans to keep the property, equipment, grounds, and other assets in good shape. Not just cosmetic stuff ; actual maintenance that prevents bigger problems.
  • Make sure the hotel complies with all local, state, and federal laws.
  • Create and run a preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment.
  • Ensure all emergency and life safety equipment gets inspected, tested, and certified per Highgate standards.
  • Handle room maintenance requests promptly and courteously.
  • Follow up on every alarm immediately ; find the exact location and cause, determine whether it's an emergency, report findings to the Front Desk, and take action if needed.
  • Assist with special projects and renovations when they come up.
  • Participate in energy conservation programs actively.
  • Review guest and meeting planner comment cards so you can identify and correct problems in a timely way.
  • Ensure compliance with the Americans Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Administer all vendor contracts controlled by the engineering department.
  • Support and participate in all Highgate Hotel programs.
  • Lead and participate in the Highgate Hotel Safety Committee.

What You Need to Bring

There are a few different paths to this role, depending on your education and experience level.

  • At least 5 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or related field. Or a 4 year college degree plus at least 1 year of related management experience. Or a 2 year college degree plus 3 or more years of related management experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required no matter what.
  • A Stationary Engineer's license if your local code requires it.
  • HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance skills are all required.
  • Long hours sometimes ; that's just reality in this kind of role.
  • Heavy work: occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force, frequently up to 50 pounds, constantly up to 20 pounds to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
  • Travel related to company business is sometimes required.
  • You need to maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times.
  • Communicate effectively ; both verbally and in writing ; with employees and guests at every level. You have to be attentive, friendly, courteous, and service oriented.
  • Listen, understand, and clarify concerns raised by employees and guests.
  • Multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines.
  • Approach every encounter with guests and employees in an attentive, friendly, courteous, and service oriented manner.
  • Attend all hotel required meetings and trainings.
  • Participate in M.O.D. coverage as required.
  • Maintain regular attendance per Highgate Hotel Standards, which will vary based on hotel needs and your schedule.
  • Keep high standards of personal appearance and grooming ; including wearing your nametag.
  • Comply with Highgate Hotel Standards and regulations for safe and efficient hotel operations.
  • Maximize productivity, identify problem areas, and help implement solutions.
  • Handle problems effectively ; anticipate them, prevent them when possible, identify them early, and solve them.
  • Understand and evaluate complex information and data from various sources.
